Komorov - back to NHL?

Nonis does not think he has enough cash to resign Komorov???. I don't get it, its  not rocket science to know he is a part that we missed. I think a deal of say 1.5 ,2, 2 and 2.5. would be a good 4 year package that they could afford. What is he thinking, he has two face punchers that make more than that, and we all know the days of face punchers are gone.
I thought Shannahan was going to be a voice of common sense. Or did I see something in Komorov that they have not. I just don't get it. He is a part built for the bottom six, and the last time I watched the Leafs they could use a guy just like him very badly.

I stand corrected.

How do you know that Leo is willing to sign a deal like that?

McLaren and Orr's combined cap hit would be slightly less the AAV of the contract you are suggesting, which might not be enough to get him signed.

Nonis won't overspend on Komarov...he'll just do it to everyone else.  I'm still expecting the team to move in the wrong direction next year.

Nonis wouldn't rule out a return for former Leaf Leo Komarov, who plans to return to the NHL, though only at the right price-point.

He wants to sign long term, and to be a Leaf, so I see a fit. The only worry I have is Nonis is not making the right moves, as we saw last season.

There has to be two mil to spare for this guy. I think he is a big piece going forward, for our bottom six.

You really don't know any of that. All we can say for sure is that he has said he enjoyed his time as a Leaf and would be happy to return. Everything past that is absolutely speculation. There very well be $2M to spare on Komarov, but that doesn't mean Komarov is willing to sign for that amount. When Nonis says the Leafs may not be able to afford him, there's a good chance he came to that conclusion through conversations with Komarov's agent, and that he's asking for a lot more money than you're suggesting he should be signed for.

Or, just more posturing through the media.

I liked Komorov when he played here, but my general (perhaps faulty) recollection was that he looked like he was more-or-less a good 4th line player.  We like those players when they are paid like 4th-liners at, say 1-1.5 million. I'm skeptical he'll be a good value player at 2.5 or more like some seem to be advocating.  One of the Marlies, like Carter Ashton at 600k-1million would probably be the choice I'd make over a 2.5 million Komorov.  (Of course, I'd trade the 5 million Clarkson for a 2.5 Komorov but we can't make that deal ...)

I'd say he's better than that.  He was just on the Finnish Olympic team.

It was partially because of injuries, but he generally played a 3rd line role with us when he was here. His two most frequent line combos were with Kadri/MacArthur and Grabovski/Kulemin. He was 10th among forwards in even-strength ice time but that was with Lupul and Frattin ahead of him and they only played 16 and 25 games respectively. And he was a big part of our PK averaging more time there than any forward except McClement and Kulemin.

I agree. I liked his tenacity and his occasional bit of offense, but really if he's demanding close to what's being reported, no thanks.

But I think that's the point being made. He did a good job filling in on the third line but I don't think anyone thought he was ideally situated there. I don't think, for instance, that anyone thought he should have bumped Lupul from that scoring winger role permanently and when he announced he wasn't coming back...I think a lot of people looked at it as an opportunity to add someone who added a little more size/scoring punch in that role(Clarkson being the sad punchline).

A big part of the PK, a pest who throws a lot of hits...that's an ideal 4th liner on the cheap. I think you want more out of a 3rd liner though.

Is there any word on how things are going between him and the Leafs. I would like to see him locked up for 2 or 3 seasons.

I hate the idea of having to sign FAs for 4th line roles - but do the leafs truly have 4th line role candidates in the system?

Bodie would be one, but I see a lot of AHL first liner candidates who probably won't develop or even fit into a 4th line role.  That's where Komorov looks good as a signing.

Ideally, I could see Bodie/McClement/Komorov as a 4th line, with higher skilled Marlies given a chance at 3rd line minutes.

Depends on what your definition of 4th line role is I suppose.  I tend to think they should grab the best players they can and slot them in the lineup as they fit.  I don't see why 1st line AHLers can't play on a 4th line in the NHL that is given ~10:00 a game.

I see Komarov as a tweener. He's a very good 4th line player, but could probably handle 3rd line minutes and given decent line mates, could probably add some offense.

Ideally, I have him in the 4th line role with heavy PK minutes. If the Leafs ran with a 3rd line as a shutdown line, he could probably be a valuable piece to that sort of line also, with heavy forecheck, knocking guys off the puck with hits and generally being an SOB to any skilled players.
