Kyle Dubas is new Leafs GM

I keep forgetting he got Colorado to retain 1/2 of Barrie's salary. That's ridiculous (but also what an additional two years of Kadri is worth.)

A transcript of the discussions Dubas had on the radio yesterday, covering pretty much all the offseason related topics:

Kyle Dubas and Raptors GM Bobby Webster:  A friendship, similar goals, similar philosophies.

Webster on Dubas:
?He was really impressive. He was young and had run his own team and had a ton of success,? says Webster. ?He?s incredibly thoughtful. He?s really smart. He doesn?t get too high or too low. He?s very deliberate on the way he wants to build a team and on the things that he values.?

Through it all, they spoke often about their philosophies on team management and leadership, areas where they shared common perspectives. They also looked to each other for advice on specific decisions they were making about the organizations they now ran.
?The way I look at it, I?m very fortunate to be able to have somebody who works in the same company, dealing with a lot of the exact same challenges ? personally, and professionally,? says Dubas.
?I think that?s even more like who we both are, independently. That?s an example I think of why we get along and why we can be from two different sports and two different backgrounds, but we probably think about things in similar ways,? says Webster. ?It?s always good to have someone like that as you go through a decision, to check in with.?

Webster and Dubas are also alike in that they make a point of acknowledging the areas of expertise where they are weak. When Ujiri first hired Webster to join his front office, one of Webster?s conditions was that he?d have the opportunity to learn more about scouting, analytics, and coaching.
?I think both of us realize that there are other people who know some of the areas we?re weak in,? says Dubas.

He looks at the Raptors as a kind of roadmap for what the Leafs are trying to accomplish. Not just the obvious championship, Dubas says, but the story of the evolution of a franchise.
?What I?ve learned from the Raptors, what I?ve learned from Bobby, Masai, and Teresa is the patience and the hard work and the toughness as a management group,? he says. ?And what I mean by toughness is the ability to stick with it when people are telling you you have to change all the time ? and then being able to have the belief in your management group and your operation, to make major moves when you need to, even when people are criticizing them vastly. ?

There are a lot of Dubas bashers out there. Him and Keefe are now tied like Siamese twins and good for Kyle that Keefe continues his traditional winning percentages. The signing of Campbell is starting to look like a very good move. Clifford adds grit that compliments Muzzin and hopefully will inspire the others to take the body a bit more.
Engvall is a great signing at a good price.
I wanna see what else Kyle has coming down the road

I like Kyle too but Campbell has only played 3 games man, let's let it settle a bit. Encouraged by Keefe's record of course and wish he was coach from October

On the mentorship of Lou Lamoriello:

Especially in the last season, the amount I learned from Lou was incredible ? not even just how to operate the team and a sports franchise, but how to treat people, the importance of your family along the way, the importance that he put on me to make sure I was taken care of in that aspect of my life, and pushing me to always make sure that our people are always doing the same thing. That may not always be his reputation to his general public, but it?s one of the things I really learned from him.

He is the type of person that no matter what you are going through and what you have on the go and what kind of jam you are in, he is going to be more upset if you don?t call him and ask for his help than if you do and you?ve done something to screw up. That was among the many, many things that I learned from him. We still talk all the time. It is sometimes about hockey but mostly about life and what is happening. I know the age gap between us is immense, but for me, it has become a great mentorship and friendship. I know my whole family feels the same about Lou as well.

Have some dollar signs. Leafs' general cap-dollar distribution by position. They're blessed to have a lot of those dollar signs invested in players that are entering or still in their prime, good value and flexibility moving forward.
