Leafs bring back Komarov (4 years, $2.95mil cap hit)

@Jeffler: Frattin-Holland-Komarov might end up being the Leafs' third line at a lower cap hit than David Bolland on his own

I'd be happy with that.

You all are getting pretty liberal with what you think is too much. I don't think in the last 3 years on this board the phrase "that is a reasonable price," has ever been mentioned.  Less than $3M/year is a reasonable price for Komarov.

Here are his cap hit comparables: http://capgeek.com/comparables/?player_id=2280

OK.  My argument is the same.

Better than kuli-. Less money, more compete.

Say what?

Yea, I really don't get it. Kulemin finishes every check, goes into all of the dirty areas of the ice, plays committed defence and probably had the most "compete" out of any Leaf player last year, whatever that means.

Was providing it for general info to help people make up their minds about it.

I think it means competitiveness.

Komorov is basically D'Amigo but really expensive.

With Nonis it's been one long line of uninspiring (at best) to awful moves.  I guess Shanahan/Nonis's plan is to rebuild the mediocre team they had a couple years ago. terrific.

I think he is in a no win situation in terms of fan reaction.  Everyone on here was clamouring to get Komarov back, yet when he signs they are unhappy about the term and the dollars.  he was a UFA...and in those cases you have to pony up or he walks.  That's just the way it is

Had Nonis let him walk people would have been equally upset.

I haven't been here for a while, but if people were honestly clamoring to bring a mediocre sparkplug back then I would suggest their priorities were out of whack.

Eventually you have to stop signing bad players to 4+ year deals. There may be a point somewhere down the line when the Leafs realize this, but they haven't yet.

On its own, I can live with this, but the Leaf cap mistakes add up.  Rather than this:

0.8 Gleason
3 Komarov
5.2 Clarkson
= 9 million

I'd prefer

8 million Statsny
1 million Carter Ashton

Sure, that makes Statsny massively, horrendously overpaid, but I assume we'd have to outbid the Blues.  I'd rather waste several million on new players at the top of the lineup than players at the bottom.

I'd also probably prefer to spend the cap space on Erhoff.  I'm not sure how much that will cost at the moment ... we will see.  Probably a lot.

Anyway, it definitely could have been worse!  Thank god for Florida!!

I think you are also assuming that Free agency is simply an auction.  I don't think there was any indication that Stastny even wanted to play in Toronto

I think it's a valid point, emphasizing the miss use of funds for a bunch of mediocre talent while not signing that big name... ever.

I think the general feeling on here was that people would like to have him back, liked how he played in a bottom 6 role, but only if the price was reasonable.

Don't really think, on this forum anyways, it was really like the 'no win' situation described above, generally.

That's just it. Some fans want it both ways, and that's not how it works.

He's a nice piece to have, but I think they'd much rather have gotten Bolland back instead.

Some fans are irrational, this isn't something new.  That wasn't the general feeling regarding him on this board or by most rational fans I've spoken with or read.

Wait for it. The complaints about the contract are just beginning to roll in.

True...but but Bolland also got a ludicrous offer that he would have to be insane not to accept.  I wish they had him back, but i would have done the same thing if I were him.  Its not as though the leafs are a chicago or an LA, where you stay for a lesser contract for the chance to win.

They had to replace him and raymond with something...and if Komarov was good enough to play on a bronze medal winning Finnish team, he's good enough for me.  I think he may surprise people this year
