Leafs file for arbitration with Kulemin (Settlement reached, 2 years, 2.8 AAV)

2.8 based on last season isn't great.  He was good defensively but his offense dried up.  But based on his ability and where he should hopefully rebound to, that could be a steal for two years.

The thing is though, he was getting chances, he was in a position to score, but nothing was going in...

Kind of reminds me of the old John Olerud slump - where he's hitting his trademark hard line drives but right at the fielders.

Thing is, it's not even like he really needs to rebound that much for it to be a good deal. If he scored, say, 15 goals and 40 points then 2.8 million would be about right considering what else he brings to the table.

Or the old Damon Stoudamire slump, where he was shooting the ball at the basket, but it was just not going in.

Pretty much. Given where contracts are at these days, $2.8M is 2nd/3rd line tweener money.

Agree.  This is a fair price, and if he rebounds even a little to the year before levels, it will be good value.

I don't know about this basket-a-ball

Perhaps a mod can rename the thread?

@DarrenDreger: Following up on @FriedgeHNIC. Kulemin settles on 2 year deal with Leafs.

Reportedly 5.6M total.

$5.6 mil per year.... Fletcher handled this negotiation. Thought he was signing Malkin.

Good to hear. He's becoming one of my favourites on the team. Mostly because of stuff like this:

Bang on guys.  $2.8 MIL for Kulemin who is one of the most complete players on the Leafs.  If he scores 15 goals along with everything else he brings including the 100+ hits he throws then this deal will even look better.  The guy is also built like a tank.

I am very high on Kulemin and hopes he retires a Leaf.

I wonder what happened to Honus Joglund?

As with quite a few others, he's been one of my favourite players.  Can do almost anything on the ice I think.  Maybe not at an elite level, but he seems to be able to do a bit of everything well - knows how to play D, forechecks, uses his body, has a heavy shot, works hard.  His possession numbers have been very good (possibly due to playing with Grabovski, but perhaps it is a chicken-egg scenario), and he had some pretty bad luck scoring wise last season.  I don't think he'll be a 30 goal guy (that was also a lucky season IMO), but he should be good for 15-20 and a very solid all-around game.

Glad he's staying.

Looking at that video, it appears that Kulemin just wasn't going to the net as much this year.

I think though that it's probably more about the decreased effectiveness of that line as a whole though. When I watch that I see Kulemin scoring a ton of goals from in close because Mac/Grabo are playing so well with the puck and he can be that loose guy.
