Leafs @ Hurricanes - Jan. 9th, 7:00pm - SN, SN 590

D'Amigo, Orr, and Ashton had a combined 1:53 of even-strength ice-time in the 1st. Good thing we don't play tomorrow. Oh wait...

Franson beaten to puck in corner. Canes keep puck down low. Defensive coverage falls apart. They score. Shocking.

Gardiner gets scratched.

That's bugging you, isn't it?  :)

I just don't get why he's singled out when he's arguably been their best overall defenseman this season.  I don't think he deserves to be scratched, especially when others are making just as glaring of mistakes as he is.  Once again, I think Carlyle has strict accountability for some and then it's non-existent for others.

It's not even arguable as far as I'm concerned.  He's the one guy who doesn't constantly give the puck away.

Yeah well, I mean, it's obvious the Leafs weren't sold on Reimer, so they made a deal to get their guy and they want to give him every opportunity to grab the job and run with it.

Unless Bernier's recent struggles continue, I don't expect much to change in that regard. And I actually doubt a new coach would make much of a difference. This seems to be a management call.

I don't doubt any of that is true - in fact, the more I see this play out, the more I agree that's exactly what happened - Bernier was brought in to be the guy.  But we, as fans, can still be annoyed at it.

I'm actually not all that annoyed with it. I like both guys, but for whatever reason I'm more confident in Bernier. That's admittedly been shaken a bit in recent days ...

As much as the current score isn't Reimer's fault, he's again not really coming up huge and stealing the job back either.

Wouldn't appreciably impact things to have them play zero shifts and spread their ice-time out among the other forwards.

I'm teasing of course.  Like Frank I do think he makes a lot of bad decisions in our end (more so than Rielly, which ought to be a concern) so a game out wouldn't be THAT amiss.  But Ranger was actually playing halfway decent (by our standards anyway) so I totally don't get Fraser being in over him.

Can't believe Gardiner is sitting for all 3 of those guys. If they aren't going to have a centre on the 4th line they may as well have just gone with 11 forwards.

Was just reminded on Twitter - first of 5 games in 7 nights too.  Way to spread that ice-time out.

The return of the flying waffles would be excellent.

I think flying toast would send the right message to the guy who seemed to be baffled by how it gets made....

Fair enough. Someone will probably just whip an actual toaster at him eventually.

And by someone, I mean Jake Gardiner.

I'm pretty sure we're all going to have to pitch in and get somebody a ticket to do this.
