Leafs @ Hurricanes - Jan. 9th, 7:00pm - SN, SN 590

the replay shows him coasting back to the net before the goal. There were 3 Hurricanes in front with 1 Leaf d man.

Not a surprise. None of the so-called qualities people attribute to him are the type that help teams win games.

Well really, nobody should blame either goalie. If it weren't for Bernier and Reimer, this team might have five wins all year.

Ignoring the weak goals from Bernier's last outing, nobody is actually blaming the goalies.  Most people who were commenting last game are upset/angry/annoyed at the fact that Carlyle does not appear to be treating Reimer fairly - Bernier seems to have a bigger leash.

Yeah well, I mean, it's obvious the Leafs weren't sold on Reimer, so they made a deal to get their guy and they want to give him every opportunity to grab the job and run with it.

Unless Bernier's recent struggles continue, I don't expect much to change in that regard. And I actually doubt a new coach would make much of a difference. This seems to be a management call.

I can't watch this game tonight, but if its 2-0 Carolina and the shots are 13-5 midway through the 1st period, it's okay: I must have seen this game at least a dozen times already this season.

But in any case the Leafs have waaaaaay bigger problems than goaltending.

Absolutely NO argument there.  Goaltending is probably the least of our problems, in fact.

Yeah. They're outplayed every night, every where except in net.

And you probably will many more times this season.

I don't doubt any of that is true - in fact, the more I see this play out, the more I agree that's exactly what happened - Bernier was brought in to be the guy.  But we, as fans, can still be annoyed at it.

Worth noting this is basically what all the "advanced stats" guys were saying - SH% would regress towards the mean and if they didn't improve their possession (aka not get heavily outshot) that they would struggle.  The Leafs tried to say that they had shot efficiency, but their ES SH% is down about 2% this season, and goaltending could help mask it for awhile - but as Mirtle demonstrated in an earlier article, they're just giving up too many shots to make it work.
