Leafs Line up this year

Here is another look at some of these shooting stats, though I must admit it is hard for me to interpret everything here as the author does not give definitions for all the stats used:

http://theleafsnation.com/2011/8/3/leafs-possession-numbers-defence

You'll note that Aulie is again way at the bottom, though you can see that he was used in extremely difficult circumstances -- very often starting in the defensive zone and playing against a high quality of competition.

Komisarek has the 2nd worst relative corsi (I'm not exactly sure what it is relative to unfortunately) despite being relatively sheltered by playing against weak competition (QOC).  Wow.  Why does this guy suck so bad?

There is reason to be suspicious again though due to Lebda's high Corsi rel number.  Perhaps it can be explained by his exceptionally high OZone start number and his tremendously poor quality of competition.

Anytime you're at the opposite end of a chart from Lebda and Komisarek, you can't be doing all that bad.

Personally, I could care less about stats like this. I like what I saw on the ice from Aulie and that's all that matters in the end to me.

That's perfectly reasonable.  I'm just not knowledgeable enough/don't have a good enough memory to be a very effective evaluator of defensive talent ...

I don't know if I remember how to do this.

I am still trying to figure out if Phil Kessel has regressed or progressed.

You have digressed.

Ahh geez, and only after 1 posts.

But seriously, I am ready for some hockey.  When does camp open?

If these are the reported lines so far I would immediately strike through these players to go to the AHL:

Lupul-Connolly-Kessel
MacArthur-Grabovski-Kulemin
Kadri-Bozak-Armstrong
Crabb-Colborne-Frattin
Heard-Dupuis-Orr
Caputi-Boyce-Rosehill (Brown??)

Aulie-Phaneuf
Liles-Schenn
Franson/Gunnarsson-Komisarek
Gunnarsson-Lashoff
Gardiner-Holzer

Based on those players I would like to see:

Lupul-Connolly-Kessel
MacArthur-Grabovski-Kulemin
Kadri-Lombardi-Armstrong
Caputi-Bozak-Brown
Dupuis-Orr

Aulie-Phaneuf
Liles-Schenn
Gunnarsson-Komisarek
Lashoff

I think Franson will be making the team over Lashoff.

I think Franson is better but I would just hate to see Franson in the pressbox night after night.  Lashoff could do it I believe.

Franson isn't exempt from waivers. Even if he was, I doubt the Leafs would send him to the AHL. Wilson's talked quite a bit about getting the defense more involved offensively and has spoken about Franson's talent in that department quite a bit.

I hate to say it but I think Lashoff needs a change of scenery. He was a top pick in the 2005 draft. I can't believe he's 25 already. Sadly, he's not much of a prospect anymore.

Wasn't coming here his change of of scenery?

I think he needs to go to another organization and not because he can't play, but because he can. Maybe he's alright sticking around, but I wouldn't be when I knew I could crack an NHL line up. He won't make the Leafs because of our depth, not because he can't be an effective rearguard.

It's really unfortunate, because I think he could be a really good defenseman in the right situation. With Gardiner and Blacker on his tail and so many ahead of him, he may not get that chance with us.

Yeah, kinda my stance on it. We just have so much depth and higher calibre prospects that I think he gets lost in the shuffle. I think he could make a very serviceable defenseman for a team that is short on d-man depth.

A good trading chip..

Franson, Gunarsson and Komisarek will likely rotate through the bottom 2 spots, with probably Franson sitting the least number of games.  Lashoff is either AHL bound or sits and waits until injuries arise.

The top four of Phaneuf, Aulie, Schenn and Liles I think is pretty much set in stone, unless Aulie has a bad 2nd year.

If there was ever a time for Burke to reach deep down into his trade tool box, it's now, to hopefully find a place for Komisarek to play. I've been a supporter of his and hoped that he could get back to his once strong defensive self, but he is quickly starting to not fit this team anymore and become the elephant on the ice.

Wow... so Komisarek is basically guaranteed a spot based on the media reports.

If I understand it correctly Aulie and Gardiner do not need to clear waivers.

Phaneuf, Komisarek, Liles, Schenn, Gunnarsson and Franson do need to clear waivers.  I think I know the Leafs top 6 dmen.

Has Phaneuf ever played the left side?

Phanuef / Schenn

Liles / Komisarek

Gunnarsson / Franson

Aulie will most likely get the final spot though, as they seem keen on keeping him with Phaneuf this year. Despite his very strong and NHL worthy play, Gardiner will likely go to the Marlies because of his waiver status.

If Burke had a trade lined up for Komisarek, it would probably be different, but that just isn't the case unfortunately.
