Leafs Line up this year

Personally I wouldn't bother trying to re invent either Phaneuf or Franson as left side dmen, square pegs and all.

Anyone know how Bozak is doing? Heard he was injured.

I wouldn't be surprised if Komi's stock is still pretty high around the league.  There's teams that don't have a devastating hitter like him.  He can also fight.  There might be some questioning his off ice antics.  But the real challenge is more about Burke trying to get the right deal in place while working around the restrictions in his contract.  And although the rich Maple Leafs might not worry so much about this, his salary drops to $3.5 million next year, which might be more affordable to some team's pocketbooks despite his cap hit.

What off ice antics?

Well he did make in on TMZ, so although he might not of actually assaulted the woman, he did lift her in the air.  For the money these players make, hanging out at a Hollywood nightclub in itself isn't very professional.  Then there's the destroyed Gatorade bottle with Tim Hunter incident.  Just get the vibe he's a loose canon that I'd think twice before adding him to my team.

I agree strongly regarding getting dmen playing the wrong side that they are used to.  That leaves the Leafs with 4 right side dmen that need to clear waivers.  Not good.

That would be unfortunate regarding Bozak.

Yeah, we've been talking about those 4 right side d for a while, it's a problem but it's also a benefit in terms of depth.

Really there are only two at issue for me though, Komi and Franson and I haven't seen enough of Franson to say a whole lot about him.

I'm a little intrigued with the state of the forward group and Lombardi being cleared for contact. If/when Bozak and Brown are healthy and a gimme with the top six...

Lombardi Bozak  Army
Boyce    Dupuis Brown

or

Kadri/Frattin  Lombardi Army
Brown/Boyce  Bozak    Dupuis

Depending on needs neither are terrible but still missing some grit.

Really looking forward to seeing if Lombardi can help with the pk.

I would guess Lombardi will start on the 4th line and work his way up. He'll also get plenty of PK time. I just can't see the Leafs sending Kadri down again.

Lupul-Connolly-Kessel
Kulemin-Grabs-MacArthur
Kadri-Bozak-Armstrong
Lombardi-Boyce-Brown
Orr-Dupuis

Aulie-Phaneuf
Liles-Schenn
Franson-Komisarek
Gunnarsson

Reimer
Gustvasson

Defense is pretty impossible to predict. I'd have a Gunnarsson-Franson bottom pairing for sure, but I think Komisarek has a spot on this team at least to start. Aulie probably has a spot too even if he's struggled, but he'll be on a shorter leash than Komisarek is.

I think we'll see this on the back end to start the season...

Aulie/ Phaneuf
Schenn/ Liles
Franson/ Gunnarsson
Komisarek

Maybe they carry 8 for a while, until Brown gets back into the line-up, but they could easily keep an extra forward as well and send Gardiner down to play on the Marlies top unit, which may be more beneficial for him in the long run.

Ignoring salaries and waiver rules, what set of defensemen do you think would be most effective? What about these guys:

Gunnar / Phaneuf
Liles / Schenn
Aulie / Gardiner

That would be ideal, but it's not going to happen, unless a Komisarek deal happens IMO. Also I think you switch Gunnarsson with Aulie and that is what I had.

Well I am not so sure you can say that things will not happen when it comes to Gardiner.  I mean I love Aulie too, but lets face it we have Liles, Franson and Gardiner in the mix since the end of last season.  He is waiver exempt and only 22 and you have to ice the best possible team.  It would not be the end of the world for him to go to the Marlies until Burke makes a deal or in the case of next season Liles isn't resigned/traded at the deadline and Gardiner takes his spot on a full-time basis and the dman number issue is a lot easier to handle.

;D  ;)

The other thing last night was Frattin's play.  It made me forget about MacArthur being on the team.  That Frattin / Grabovski / Kulemin line looked real good and the rh shot created a couple of opportunities as well.

Next year might be better for Frattin though after a year in the AHL.
