Leafs @ Oilers - Mar. 16th, 9:30pm - SNO, Fan 590

Yeah, this might be the last game I bother watching this season. What's the point.

Probably what Kessel's thinking. They're icing two thirds of a crap roster filled in with grass, mud and duct tape. I'll say this, if the Leafs don't figure it out, ie, if this isn't a true rebuild process, I'll be shrinking back from the NHL as a fan of a team.

I'm not overly worried about the depth of this particular tank, more the long haul, that a few years of Eternal Stench is bearable and that they stick to it.

Also, somewhere in the back of my head, should say, LA or Ottawa land McDavid, I'll be a little crappy about that.

Also, for what it's worth, you're down 4-1, how can you let someone elbow your boy in the head without response?

Gutless pukes.

Seriously. The best reason for the ref to give Ference a penalty there was to prevent the game from getting out of hand. As it turned out, he didn't have to worry.

Don't really care what Kessel is thinking. He's being paid $10million to play, not think. Heck, give me $10 million and I'll happily watch every minute of the rest of this ridiculous season.

Edit...you can even pro-rate it. At Kessel's salary, he'll earn about $1.25 million for the last 10 games. Give me that money, I'll watch the games and Phil can sit at home.

You'd swear Kessel is the only player on this team...

It's mind boggling.

When I opened a pack of hockey cards as a kid, I would torch the original Gretzky rookie card inside because the gum in the pack wasn't quite to my liking.

I don't understand why Kessel's salary has become such a burr for some people. I don't see how any of this would be any more palatable, including his own effort, if he were making less money and MLSE were making more.

It really makes no sense to me....Kessel up until this year was full value for the contract he signed.  5th most goals in the whole league playing with a crap center.  Put him on a good team with a star centre, he scores 40 guaranteed and probably 50.
Kessel has sucked this season, but there isn't anyone on this team that hasn't.  To pile on him just because he makes the most money is just ignorant.

As for Kessel?s statement that this is an ?all-time low,? head coach Peter Horachek had little time for sympathy. ?We?re playing the best game in the world, and you?re still getting paid pretty good money to do it,? the beleaguered Leafs coach said.

?They?ve got to ? suck it up, and let?s go. Let?s do something about it. Let?s win the game. Let?s be focused for 60 minutes. Let?s make sure we?re all ready to play within the confines of our structure, and be playing with passion. You?re getting paid pretty good money.?

Coach ttorachek told it like it was.  Poor little Leaf babies!

Maybe just some Leafs bias here, but I don't really think that was suspension worthy. Obviously a terrible result, but Kadri's skating behind the net at full speed and Fraser bends forward with his head down at the last second. Kadri didn't have time to react to that. We'll see what the league decides.

And for the record I don't think that was that bad either. Ference definitely knew it was Kadri he was going up against, but Naz kind of dropped on his own a bit right before contact, which, like with Fraser, put his head closer to the opposing players arms. Maybe the onus in both cases should be more on the attacking player, but those are split second reactions that they have to make at very high speeds.

I'm ok with both of them. I wouldn't expect any supplementary discipline for either. Kadri's was clearly accidental. Ference's was deliberate in intent to hit, but Kadri stopped and changed directions at the same time.

Way to go boys, I knew you couldn't do it!  It just goes to show you, put in a dishonest effort and the team will reap the punishments.

So it's OK for Kessel to not perform because the money is coming from a big corporation? That's some logic. Maybe I can get a job with your employer at, I don't know, 10 times your salary, and then proceed to do basically nothing for the next 6 months. Where do I sign?

Would your job be rebutting arguments nobody made like this one?

Except I don't at all say that it's ok for Kessel to not be performing. What I do say is that it's not worse for me because Kessel makes what he does. No matter what a NHL player earns they're making a lot of money and a certain level of effort is required.

The amount of money that a single player makes doesn't materially affect the way the game affects me. Kessel's salary doesn't make ticket prices higher and it doesn't make my cable bill go up. The only difference to me between Kessel making what he does and him making less is how much money MLSE has and, so, I don't let that affect my criticism of him.

Reading that as "It's OK because MLSE is a big corporation" is pretty ridiculous. The same would be true if MLSE were owned by an individual. I want everyone on the Leafs to play their best, regardless of salary.
