Leafs recall Josh Leivo; JVR out 6-8 weeks with fracture in left foot

1) Leivo turns 23 in May. He has 30 points in 35 games and was just named to the AHL All-Star game. This is a huge opportunity for him, it's basically make or break now.

2) CHOO-CHOO

3) The Marlies will now be without arguably their 4 best forwards from like a month ago (Nylander, Leivo, Panik, Arcobello) + Brown is still out. Big test for them.

If it's towards the end of that estimate does it mean we won't be able to trade JVR before the deadline? Or will teams not be so fussed about this sort of injury with him being able to play shortly after the deadline?

Well, this certainly muddies the water in terms of moving him at the deadline. I imagine teams will want to see he's at least skating/practicing before making a trade. Good opportunity for Leivo, though. An extended period where he'll hopefully be playing meaningful minutes.

He's got another two years on his deal after this season, so I don't think teams will be too concerned.

I don't think trading him at the deadline was ever a strong possibility but I don't know this affects things too much so long as Doctors think he'll eventually be 100%.

But, side note, anyone else maybe think that between the San Jose loss and now JVR, who's probably been the team's best forward this year, being out that we might start to see a bit of a prolonged downward slope in terms of the record? Admittedly they don't have far to go but this wasn't a team that could afford to lose its most reliable scoring threat.

I believe he has an NTC that kicks in this off season, which will limit our ability to move him.  I don't know when exactly it kicks in, so we might have time during the off season, but its worth noting.

I doubt we'll see a losing streak of any significant length. Losing JVR will certainly hinder the rising winning percentage, but I don't expect to see a dramatic decrease in win percentage.

It would kick in July 1st. He's not eligible to have one before that.

Yeah I would be shocked if they continued to get points in games at the rate they have the last few months.  I don't see where the scoring will continue to come from.

I felt like it was likely coming regardless, but, yeah, I do expect we'll see the team win less frequently over the next couple months - especially since we should also start seeing some of the pending UFAs being moved out in that time, and likely replaced by guys like Clune and Frattin (and by whatever contracts that they may have to take on to facilitate these days, who should represent downgrades in talent).

Doesn't basically every one of our season-ending spirals start with a terrible West-coast trip? Not that this one was that bad, it just ended horribly.

So is Bernier good again, or bad again?  I can't keep track.

If they move Reimer (which they should), I think the goaltending will be suspect enough for them to drop their Points% substantially.  With JVR out until March (or he played his last game as a Leaf), this will likely exacerbate things further...add in Bozak's and Parenteau's departures, and they're likely going to be bottom 5 at least.

Having said that, I'm hoping the Leivo is serviceable in the top 9.

True. I suppose I'm playing amateur psychologist a bit here. A loss that bad + the loss of one of their best players for an extended stretch of time seems like it would be especially bad for a team that I think most would agree isn't winning because they were unexpectedly good, but rather that they seemed to buy into and play well in a new system.

Also, I figure it does give the team the excuse to cut any pretenses towards it not being a rebuilding year. Maybe the deadline selling starts now-ish.

This is my hope. It also showcases Leivo as additional trade bait.

He's inconsistent. He was never going to stay as bad as he was early in the season, but he's also not going to be as good as he was for a short stretch recently. So, really, he's probably neither good nor bad. He's just ordinary.

I'm sure the drop off is coming but we have talked about it for two months and it hasn't happened yet.  I'm not holding my breath for it at this point.    I do hope that Leivo plays well enough that JVR's absence isn't the reason for years drop off though.  It would be nice if he rests listed himself as a 2nd/3rd liner of the next few years.
