Carlyle seems to have trouble icing a line up without 2 guys that can fight and little else, no slight to Devane.

That said, I hope Rielly never looks back and he has a stellar year with the Leafs. If he doesn't, the Leafs have the depth moving ahead.

Funny that an injury would get him into the lineup.  Maybe the kid takes the chance and runs with it and forces the Leafs never to send him away.  Which would mean someone else loses their job.

Devane is a better player than McLaren or Orr by quite a margin.  Orr isn't going anywhere but maybe McLaren goes down at some point.

I think having at least two guys who can impose some fear is a big part of what the Leafs want right now.  They are already down Clarkson, McLaren and now Fraser so not surprised at all they brought up some toughness.

I think some might be reading more into this than is there.

Kassian and Neil and friends will want to dance on Saturday.

Without McLaren and Fraser they probably just want to lighten Colty's load.

Then, which forward comes out of the lineup so Devane can get in?

I think there was a good chance he would have played tomorrow, it might have been Gardiner or Ranger coming out of the line up though.

Easy: Ashton.

Ashton is wearing a full cage after breaking his nose in the Tinordi fight, so Devane could go in for him.

If Ashton can't fight and Devane can, it seems like a pretty logical swap as far as Carlyle goes.

Bingo!

Okay, sure, but, there's a few other tough teams up for the Leafs in the next little while. Edmonton added a few face punchers. Minnesota has Konopka and Cooke who Carlyle will feel the need to keep in check. And most of the other teams in the little while have a couple guys Carlyle will want to have someone to match up with. If Ashton can't fight, then Devane is here to stay until he can. A broken nose takes a couple weeks to heal properly, and, by then, we're looking the Leafs having played close to 10 games.

Just as an aside for a second, according to the score, Morgan and Jake will probably be a d pairing.

Looks like Randy will roll two d pairs for most of the game based on his track record and shelter the dynamic young duo.

They were paired in practice but Carlyle said it was unlikely they would stay together for the Ottawa game.

My guess is they'll see time together on the PP, but not at even strength.

Probably, they were paired on the powerplay a bit during the preseason. I actually hope they have Gunnarsson play with him for his first few games. Give him the steadiest partner we can. I missed the Philly game, but in game one Phaneuf-Franson and Gardiner-Ranger were used a few times so the other pairings wouldn't be out of wack.

I'd like to see Ashton with a role besides trying to replace McLaren.  Don't like seeing him with a broken nose because he fought someone that had their visor on.  He was impressive in pre-season.  I know it's tough with Bodie playing well.

Ashton-we call him "Home Alone" as he looks like that kid grown up, has suprised. I was not happy with that trade but this kid has really come along and not afraid to mix it up and he seems to have some acumen around the net. I think one day he may even be a 20 a year man for us..Another good acquisition by Burke/Nonis combo.
And what is Aulie doing, bad 6 D Man on a bad D

The #Leafs have recalled forward Spencer Abbott from the AHL's Toronto Marlies. #TMLtalk

I didn't think they could afford this as things stood.

Kulemin's hurt, but, they also still had some LTIR room from Fraser that they were saving for just such an emergency . . . and, well, here we are.

FriedgeHNIC: Kulemin out two weeks with chipped bone in ankle. Blocked Phaneuf shot in practice

Yikes.

Actually, it doesn't sound all that bad, really:

jonasTSN1050: Kulemin could have played on the ankle for about a month, but faced the potential of injuring more severely in the process.
