FriedgeHNIC: Kulemin out two weeks with chipped bone in ankle. Blocked Phaneuf shot in practice

Yikes.

Actually, it doesn't sound all that bad, really:

jonasTSN1050: Kulemin could have played on the ankle for about a month, but faced the potential of injuring more severely in the process.

Still, missing both Kulemin and Clarkson for the next two weeks is gonna hurt. Somebody better wrap Lupul up in bubble wrap.

Anyone think the depth at forward is a little suspect if Devane and Abbott are your call ups?

Blocking Phaneuf shots in practice...Love that Kulemin.

Hearing that it was Phaneuf, with a little digging you'll probably discover that Kulemin was 15' to the side of the net... :D

Actually, I heard Kulemin was in a Mississauga mall enjoying a Cinnabon when he got hit.  ;)

Yes...

Would be nice to have that Joe Colborne guy.

Based on his previous play, I don't know if I'd consider him much more depth worthy than Devane or Abbott.

The Leafs sent Devane and Abbott back down to the AHL yesterday so they could play in Sunday's Marlies game, and today they called Devane and Trevor Smith up. Here are the lines from practice:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Bolland-Raymond
McClement-Kadri-Bodie
Ashton-Smith-Orr
Devane-Clarkson

I wouldn't read too much in Carlyle's practice lines are they're often not what we see in game, but it might not be too long before Kadri gets stuck in a 3rd line spot like that if he doesn't pick things up. Also, it's nice to see that the Leafs gave Smith, who was recently named the Marlies captain and has been very good for them in their first two games, a call-up and maybe even a game or two.

Would have, but getting another team to loan him to you after they picked him up on waivers Sept 30 would be tough.  ;)

Yeah, that flippin' waivers thing.

Colborne isn't a role player. Having him to play 6 minutes or whatever Abbott and Devane got on Saturday is akin to having Phil Kessel on your 4th line. He's probably not going to score a lot, he doesn't play defence and he's not an energy guy. Regardless of how talented he is, he's completely useless.

So to answer the original question, not really.

I agree with your overall point, however I was just looking at it from an asset point of view.

He is talented and I think there's hope for him yet, so I would have rather held and sold a bit higher on him, even if that meant that he played in the bottom 6 for a while.

Answering Frank's question in regards to Colborne was more that Kulemin and Clarkson are out and had we found a way to keep Joe, he could have served to fill in better on the top 6 hole, than Abbot or Devane.

??  He hasn't been great or anything, but he's got one goal.  Not like he's been invisible.

Well, as we saw with the way Carlyle deployed his lines on Saturday, it's doubtful Colborne would have seen significant time in a top 6 role anyway. Raymond was simply bumped up. I'm not convinced that Colborne would be a better choice in a bottom 6 role than Devane, Bodie (who has been a pleasant surprise IMO) or even Carter Ashton who didn't dress.

The fact that Abbott was called up may have simply been recognition for good play, but never intended to be more than that as evidenced by the fact that he didn't play much, and was subsequently sent down in favour of Trevor Smith, who may be more suitable for a bottom 6 assignment, as is Devane.

He's got 3 pts actually.  PPG so far this season.  Bolland has 4 pts so far as well.... I'll take my 2nd and 3rd line centers playing at PPG paces all season thank you very much.  (Yes, I know it won't keep up).

That said, I am totally fine with Carlyle alternating who is getting those minutes.  If you need offense, put out Kadri on your 2nd line.  If you need someone to shutdown the opposition, put out Bolland.  I like how Carlyle has used both of them.

Judging by the way Ashton played in camp, I was a bit disappointed in his play when the regular season started. He was not flying like he was in pre-season, because I understood keeping Ashton over Colborne for the role that was going to be played. It's early, so maybe Ashton continues better play.

I wasn't sold on Smith during camp, maybe he changes my mind tomorrow night, if he plays.

Bolland and Raymond have so far been effective at both ends of the ice. The Leafs are in a position where they have the luxury of deploying 3 lines in most situations. I'd have no problem using Bolland's line down by a goal late in a game. They don't have to be strictly a checking line.

Don't do it.  That skating ability is too rare.

From Elliotte Friedman's 30 Thoughts:

14. There is definitely some level of conversation going on between other teams and Toronto involving Jake Gardiner. I despise the word "shopped," as it's more like a feeling-out process. If the Maple Leafs do decide to do it, it's going to be for a young asset or assets. So, you have to look at teams with talented young players. This is PURELY my speculation, but if teams like Dallas, Florida or Minnesota would be interested, you could see a match.

15. The Gardiner talk surprised me, because he was so impressive against Boston in last year's playoffs. There are scouts who still have questions, but most agree that he has a valuable skill -- he can skate the puck out of trouble.
