Leafs @ Sharks - Jan. 9th, 7:00pm - CBC TSN 1050

Such a weird reference, but when people talk about HNIC I always think of the opening scene in HBO's The Newsroom, someone in or on the production staff or board at Rogers needs to give that speech.

HNIC isn't the best anymore, but it can be, it already has a special place in the nation's heart, it only needs to not suck and people will warm to it.

It looks to me like Bernier is really coming out of the crease to challenge the shooter over the last few games.

The speech about how America isn't great anymore?

True. CBC had the hockey nostalgia and Canadiana down pretty well. Rogers has replaced it with pointy shoes and a plastic puck that has to be put in a slot machine to get highlights.

As someone who watches from overseas HNIC was something I always enjoyed cos it seemed to be a Canadian institution - this is how hockey should be watched. I used to really enjoy coming in after my team's game over here and sitting down and watching the show. It had an air of importance.

Now it's sort of lost that air and is very much has the feeling of Fox Sports, going for ratings over quality via sensational rather than sensible analysis.

Yeah, mostly just thematically, not being the best, but having the potential to be again.

I used to criticize Cherry for (as I thought) intentionally mispronouncing names.  I was wrong.  He's got something scrambled in his brain.  He just called Huberdeau Humidor.

I'm in the same boat mate, home on Saturday night after the Celtic game(had season book for 22 years) and a few jars with your friends, stick HNIC on at midnight on one of the dodgy Sky North American channels.

It's nicer having games on at a more reasonable time now though.

Anyways, these are all good points as to why the Rogers' broadcast sucks but, honestly, I wouldn't even mind if HNIC was just as bad, so long as it was different. There's a monochromatic element to hockey coverage these days that takes a lot of the fun out of it.

Well said.

I expect Rogers figured there'd be appropriate nationalism in the broadcast via the Home Hardware commercials.

Well if all you're looking for is different, can I suggest watching the opposing teams coverage of most Leafs games?

It's usually American and it's usually comically/maddeningly pro the American team...it sucks...but it's different from a lot of the Canadian coverage.

Admittedly this is fast approaching horse-drawn carriage and whalebone corset level of anachronism but I watch Leafs games via cable TV.

Also, and I'm just basing this on the occasional American team/American team game I watch but they never actually strike me as genuinely different. I'm talking about a genuinely different approach to broadcasting, not just a different set of talking dopes.
