I'm giving Phaneuf the benefit of the doubt. I think he's nursing an injury of some kind.

If it's the sort of thing that can be healed by resting, I'd sit him out for the Kings game which would give him a break until Sunday to make his return.

So if Phaneuf's nursing an injury he goes out and tries to injure JVR?  *shakes head*

I did like the hit. But this stuff happens all the time. I remember watching Steve Thomas knocking Rick Viave out cold by accident.

Not all the time. That Steve Thomas hit was many years ago. Recent memory is of Ovechkin trying to hit Malkin and hitting Semin (i think) instead. We are talking intentional bone crushing hits.

Teammates run into each other all the time.

How Phanuef missed Marleau is beyond me.

I seem to recall Don Cherry's Rock 'Em Sock 'Em videos never having trouble amassing a fairly lengthy section on teammates hitting one another by accident.

I'm pretty sure the Leafs have had a couple others this season. It's just that, when they don't result in an injury or an important goal, they tend not to be particularly memorable.

There's a pretty big difference between two teammates running into each other, which we see pretty frequently, and one teammate hitting another teammate with a bodycheck.

I defend Phaneuf a lot, since I am surrounded by nothing but Habs, Wings and Flyers fans, unfortunately. He's not perfect, but certainly a helluva lot better than they give him credit for.

I haven't been able to defend this. It was a bone-headed decision, and poorly timed on top of that.

Can you imagine the outrage had JVR would've been concussed?

Serious question, since NHL is concerned about player safety, intentional or not, can the NHL ever suspend a player for hitting a teammate?

Exactly.  To top it all off, one can call Phaneuf a reckless fool for even attempting to hit anyone, least of all his own teammate.  For heaven's sake,  it was moreso a 'mental' mistake.
