Leafs Training Camp Opens

For me, the biggest question mark of these last few preseason days is why hasn't Prust been released from his PTO yet?

I think if the team breaks down as 13-8-2 then who that 13th forward is remains a fairly open question. I don't think someone like Brown or Leipsic will be there. Froese is maybe the guy but he also might be AHL bound. Prust might be the guy.

TOT puts Colin Greening, Brooks Laich on waivers.

Well then. I'm pretty surprised about Laich. This could mean Hyman and Brown are both on the roster.

Campbell and Froese were also placed on waivers.

Should we assume that necessarily means they won't be on the team? Admittedly it'd be a crummy thing to do to someone but considering their salaries, waiving them in the interest of clearing them out and getting them off the books would be a smart thing to do even if, in the event nobody claims them, they're still your first choice to be on the 4th line.

So assuming that all those players are assigned to the Marlies (or claimed), the roster looks like:

Michalek-Kadri-Komarov
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Martin-Holland-x
x

Marincin-Rielly
Gardiner-Carrick
Hunwick-Zaitsev
Corrado-Polak

Andersen
Enroth

Brown, Leivo, Prust, and Soshnikov are the remaining forwards for those 2 spots. Babcock already said Soshnikov would start with the Marlies, I'm guessing they're waiting for him to be 100% cleared before that happens.

The fact that Prust is still on the roster is a little concerning. But I'm still hoping Brown takes that 4RW spot and Leivo is the extra forward.

I wouldn't say it's a 100% certainty, no. Especially for Laich. I still think he'd be fine to have on the team as a 13th forward instead of Leivo or *shudders* Prust.

Assuming they do cut Greening and Laich, how does this impact the expansion draft protected list?

Both those guys were UFAs at the end of the year, so they wouldn't have been in the conversation to be protected. If Leivo is on the team full-time and plays 40 games this season then he could be one of the two forwards we would need to expose to meet that requirement (along with Holland probably).

I was thinking the same thing - especially with Laich.

Is there a great deal of difference between Prust and Clune from a skill perspective? I ask out of ignorance, but it was notable that Babcock wanted Clune in the lineup at parts of last season.

I am so happy.

Edit: I think it'd be better to cut Hunwick too and keep both Brown and Leivo. That'd push Marincin back down to third pair and we can cycle Corrado and Polak as his partner.

Disappointed for Laich as I'm a fan of him. Thought he'd have hung around. But not disappointed if it means Brown is staying up, I like him even more.

This looks like a shrewd cap move to me.  They just freed up $4.5 million worth of cap space.

Not even close. If, for instance, Hyman and Brown make the team instead, they only free up $106K in cap space. If it's Leivo instead of one of those two, then it's ~$390K in cap space.

How do you get to 4.5?

Cap Hit: $4,500,000

Yeah, but his full cap hit only gets wiped if he's claimed. If he's in the AHL they only save 950k on his cap hit but most of that is eaten by whoever replaces him.
