Now there's going to be 10 articles about Matthews breaking the glass and how hard his shot is and what he was thinking at the moment it broke and how he felt about Marner's pass and was it on his tape and...

Are you surprised that you shattered the glass in practice?

Matthews: Absolutely. I don?t have the best one-timer, so when that happened, I was shocked. I think everybody else on the ice was shocked, too.

Correction: There are going to be at least 40 articles about how bad Matthews' one-timer is, and how the Leafs blew it not taking Laine (he of the 'good' one-timer).

Damien? Steve? Glenn?? You listening?

Babcock says Soshnikov will start season with the Marlies because of his injury.

Per Babs, Sosh had hamstring issues, team shut him down to get strength up so he's not injured all the time. Will start with Marlies.

Tony Cameranesi and Kasimir Kaskisuo also here at Marlies camp.

So Soshnikov is out...so roster looking more like:

Komarov-Kadri-Michalek
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Martin-Laich-Brown
Holland-Greening

I'm guessing Brown goes down and we keep 8 defencemen instead. While I haven't watched a ton of the pre-season, it doesn't really sound like he's made a big impact yet.

IMHO, Brown will go down due to a numbers game. However he had pretty decent games, with limited linemates and time.

I Guess it makes more sense to not lose Carrick/Corrado on waivers and they wil go with 8 D

I don't see them rolling 8 D with all the NHL ready forward talent.  I don't think Shannyco is afraid to make the tough choice of placing a D on waivers if that's what it comes down to.

My opinion of course, but I have a sneaking suspicion that one of Hunwick or Corrado will be in tough to make roster.

I think they'll roll 7 D.

I'm hoping the theory that Polak's so well compensated in order to make him waiver-proof is true.

So, my hoped-for opening night line-up:

Komarov-Kadri-Michalek
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Holland-Matthews-Nylander
Greening-Laich-Hyman
Leivo-Martin

Gardiner-Zaitsev
Rielly-Carrick
Hunwick-Corrado
Marincin

Mine isn't that far off from yours.

Komarov-Kadri-Marner
JVR-Bozak-Brown
Michalek-Matthews-Nylander
Martin-Laich-Hyman
Greening, Holland

Rielly-Zaitsev
Gardiner-Carrick
Marincin-Polak
Corrado

Andersen
Enroth

So a not so premature 7 days to go roster looks like:

Fowards (Locked in)

JVR - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Kadri - Komarov
Hyman - Bozak - Michalek
Martin - Holland

In the limbo for the final 2 spots (if they run with 8 D)
Greening, Laich, Brown, Kapenen, Leivo

From a pure asset management POV I would keep: Leivo and one of Greening/Laich
due to 2 simple reasons:
They can be shipped at the deadline as rentals and the Leafs get more picks
Brown and Kapenen (despite outplaying the competition) are waivers free.
So they need to pick who to risk lose: Greening/Laich or Leivo.

On D:
Gardiner - Zaitzev
Hunwick - Rielly
Marincin - Carrick
Corrado/Polak.

Polak and Hunwick will problaby be gone by the deadline that can also translate into more picks.

I don't really see any appeal to having Leivo on the team. He's a fine injury-replacement option right now but I can't see him becoming a long-term NHL player.

Yeah. The only real appeal is that he'd be able to qualify as one of the players the team is required to expose in the expansion draft - which is a pretty weak justification for keeping him on the roster.
