Lecavalier Bought Out

I like it alot.  The Flyers just picked up the best offensive player on the market.  Think of it this way....Lecavalier > Briere,  Lecavalier's cap hit < Briere's cap hit.  With this signing & the Streit signing, & the addition by subtraction in goal....this team is already better than they were last year.  To pick up a guy like Vinny at $4.7mil. is good value against the cap.  The contract is 1 year longer than I would like; but, 4-5 years down the road...the cap should be higher, & the cap hit will be less impactful.

Things should work out great provided Steve Mason continues his uninterrupted string of great seasons since his rookie year.

Now wait just a minute! Are you implying that once again the Flyers have gone after high profile free agents without adequately filling the most important position on the team??

So here's to you Ron Hextall.
A city turns its lonely eyes to you

LOL, not to mention Flyers are already over the cap with only Mason as goalie.  Are they going to ask the NHL if they can have a 2nd goalie free of charge?

There's a full No-Move Clause in Lecavalier's deal

How the hell can the Flyers fit this under the cap and still have a full roster?

They can be 10% over until the end of training camp (I still think that's the case).

Pronger's $4.9 mil will go on LTIR to free up money.  They currently have 24 signed including 9 dmen so one dmen beyond Pronger will be waived/traded/whatever to free up a little more. They'll then need to sign RFA Gustafsson & a goalie and they may have close to $6 mil to do so.

That ignores the possibility of a trade which seems now more likely - as they've been looking to move a dman and they may have an excess young center to peddle.

They're actually not in bad cap shape for next season:
http://capgeek.com/flyers/
though most of it is currently spent.

Well they're not in great shape either.

As of the moment they're 10M over the cap with Lecavalier (Pronger will bring that down, though I thought there was talk of him maybe returning last year).

They don't have a #1 goalie (or a real one anyway), and can't afford one (they'll likely have trouble fitting in a backup). Next year Giroux will be getting a large contract, and Schenn, Couturier and Read will be looking for raises.

Streit has the potential to be a dangerous contract.

They're definitely better with Lecavalier and Streit, but they haven't added any good defensive players, and their goaltending has the potential to be terrible.

Mason had 7 good games last year after playing 171 poor ones over the last 4 seasons. What could go wrong?

How are they $10 mil over the cap?
http://capgeek.com/flyers/

According to Capgeek, they're $318k over but they'll get relief for Pronger's $4.9 mil deal.

And they can probably sign Tim Thomas (who has apparently expressed "intrigue" to join Philly) and RFA Gustafsson with their cap space (Pronger plus one of the 9 dmen gone).

Meanwhile, with LeCavalier, Giroux, Schenn, Couturier & Talbot for center, they can probably flip one to get them some help/eat a contract because they don't need/have the ice time for four offensive/top 6 centers. Naturally, one or two could move to a wing.

Braydon Coburn ($4.5 mil cap hit) trade rumours have been floating for a couple of weeks or more.

I don't see a gigantic panic and they'll be an improved club come September.

I guess I was reading the Salary Payroll as the Cap Payroll, and I'm not sure why the bonuses don't count (not a CBA expert) but 300K over it is.

Is there a team that's seen more benefit from CBA's than the Flyers? The Pronger contract AAV and subsequent LTIR (I think the NHL should look into this), the Richards and Carter deals of the same backdiving nature, and now the Buyouts for Bryz and Briere allowing them to add Streit, Lecavalier and potentially Thomas.

I mean good for them I guess. Too bad Burke was busy being honourable and signing players for only 5 years for even money every year.

Seriously, where is all the money tied up in this team? Philly doesn't have one forward making over 5M per and we have 3, and we may not have enough cap space to add FA's this summer and they can add 3 marquee guys? Makes me angry.

Philly... barf. I wish just one time the Leafs could sign a top tier UFA. I would love if the Leafs got Vinny for what PHI got him for.

They're not done dealing yet.  Look for Mezaros and/or Coburn to move....and another goalie coming in.  Most Flyers fans were absolutely ecstatic to see the cosmonaut kicked to the curb.  Bryzgalov wasn't well liked by his teammates either.  I don't see the Flyers parting with Couturier or B. Schenn unless they got an outrageous offer for either.

Ugh.

What a meh city, populated in large part by scumbag sports fans.

Cheesesteaks.

probably a stupid question but how can the Flyers sign Lecavalier when free agency begins Friday? He was bought out so he is a free agent like every other player, no?

He agreed to a deal. He can't officially sign until the 5th.

Was it always like this for free agents or is this a new CBA thing? I could swear I heard on the radio today that it was not until this Wednesday midnight that teams could start talking money and terms to free agents.

This is what I thought, too.

I know it is primarily a fiction that deals aren't made before the time they're actually allowed (hence all those deals at 12:01 July 1st in the past).

But they aren't even trying to maintain that fiction.....

Bonuses do count, but, teams are allowed to exceed the cap by 7.5% with those bonuses. If those bonuses are achieved, they have to carry that overage in the next season, though.

This is new, and there's an extra exception for players that became free agents as the result of a compliance buyout. They were free to talk to teams immediately after the buyout was processed.

We could find out sooner than Friday who the Leafs, or any team for that matter, have acquired through free agency. They just cannot officially sign a contract until Friday....
