Lightning vs. Maple Leafs - Apr. 9th, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

Matthew Knies yesterday: we were playing kind of soft

Matthews Knies today: walk off hat trick

Like I said, that stick play around Point was wicked.

Yes it was. I complain a lot about him not scoring goals but that was elite stuff.

This has to be a bit deflating for Tampa. Their best player blew two grade-A looks to lose a valuable point.

The play in OT was ... something.

I only caught the last 15m of the 3rd and OT but they said he blocked a bunch of shots.
7. He's actually played well since Carlo came on board. The OT thing happens. He made a great retrieval off his shot and passed it to 34.

Does anyone know if they have an amulet or contacts or something that can make all opposing skaters look like Tampa Bay Lightning players? Asking for a friend.

Like I said I missed most of the game. What are everyone's impressions? Was the run of play pretty even? I saw the Hedman PP goal and looks like they got another.

Much better effort than the Florida game but Tampa spent a lot of time in the Leaf zone, had lots of shot attempts, several goal posts. Leafs blocked a LOT of shots which is both good and bad. At the same time, Leafs took advantage of some Tampa breakdowns in their end. Overall, I think Tampa outplayed the Leafs but not by a whole lot. Kucherov was dangerous whenever he was on the ice. Kind of shocked that he didn't win it in OT.

Bring on the Bolts and Amalie Arena in the playoffs....... we have the Tank ready to roll.

After watching Knies tonight I actually see a possible avenue for Leafs to win two playoff rounds: Leafs beat Ottawa, and Tampa beats Florida in 1st round, and then Leafs beat Tampa in 2nd round.

GLG!

Def. Watch that backcheck by Kuch...he eventually made it back to the blueline and where was Hedman going?
That’s just the nature of 3v3 OT. Most players who get the overtime assignment will hammer the gas pedal for one or two drives, and try to reserve as much as they can on the defensive side in hopes of another push the other way (Willy style).

I didn't catch the 1st, but Tampa controlled the puck a lot in the 2nd. Didn't generate a ton of high quality chances, as the Leafs did a pretty solid job of defending the slot and net-front, as well as not letting pucks through. 3rd period was more even, for sure, with both teams having stretches where they controlled the play.

Tampa's 3rd period was certainly helped by the officiating. They started the 3rd period on the PP. Tavares got high sticked drawing blood and the refs had to review the play to actually call the penalty because they missed it initially. Then they Cernak got to pull Knies off the PP by punching him multiple times until Knies retailliated. They got a PP off the Domi trip (when Domi wouldn't have been on the ice if Knies wasn't pulled off). Then they got the powerplay off the McMann crosscheck (legitimate penalty) while ignoring the crosscheck on Robertson that happened at the same time. The three powerplays they ended up with kept giving them momentum when the Leafs took it back.

Refs just wanted to see Knies score a hat trick in OT, so I don't blame them.

Again, very funny for the Panthers to have to watch TOR and TBL use their game in hand on a 3-pt game.

First period was good for the Leafs because L1 was not playing their usually tentative 'lets feel out this game for 40 min' thing they've been doing lately. Maybe it was the legs still going or the frustration of not being able to do much in the Florida game, but they came out and set the tone with purpose, intense puck hunting, and got rewarded early before Vasilevskiy could settle into his game.

Tampa pushed back with a lot of zone time and some in tight chances, but the Leafs broke out the other way for multiple odd-man rushes (which they should've finished at least 1-2 of to clamp down this game more easily). Period 2 was way more careful from both teams given the long change and Leafs tried to keep it boring until the penalty issues got the Lightning some actual momentum.

Knies scored off a lot of good work on the boards and eating hits in front of the net.
Marner was quick and decisive and used his agility and processing speed to win pucks and kick start more direct offense while defenders were still trying to dig into the initial puck battles. The self-pass slapper over the blocker to open the scoring was so beautiful.
Matthews leveraged his gravity (how much attention he receives from defenders) to get his linemates very open looks off slot passes and rebound plays.

I will say that I think the Leafs still just match up better with Tampa in general. Tampa plays with some speed but they aren't as clutch and grabby defensively as Florida is. I think it lets Toronto counterattack better. That and Vasilevskiy isn't immortal against the Leafs.
