Liles called up from Marlies

By all accounts he is by far and away the best dman in the AHL.

Pretty surprising given the production of Brennan.

I watched him yesterday against the Bulldogs from the third row, and you could see him giving pointer to players, making nice short passes to open up space, and definitely looked like the best guy on the ice for the Marlies.

It would make sense to some him in Edmonton as they undoubtedly need help on the blueline and Liles making a 1st pass to the young guns could appeal to Eakins. Fingers crossed.

It appears Gunnar might need a rest.  I don't know, maybe having a bit of rotation could be a good thing to keep everyone sharp.

He looked pretty good to me on Saturday (granted, I missed most of the 2nd period).

Poulin tells @HayesTSN that J-M Liles has been the Marlies most consistent player and has the "highest grades" of any player down there.

I hope that he gets at least a game to show what he can do. Although it probably won't matter, once Fraser returns there won't be any room for him on the roster with Rielly staying.

No glaring problems, just that he might be a bit banged up.  I'd like to see some more physicality from him but the schedule doesn't always allow (Friday-Saturday games and a Tuesday-Wednesday coming up).

With his experience and relatively young legs shouldn't he be the best D on the Marlies? It is not like he is a 19 year old first year guy they are raving about..I don't know he had plenty of time to prove himself in the bigs. I would guess he is up because they only have 6 healthy D and if anything were to happen they are not just down the street for a quick call up? If they move him in for Ranger for a game or two that is fine with me

^ Agreeable.  Ranger hasn't set the world on fire.  If anything, he should be teaching down at the Marlies.  But then again, I gave up trying to keep up with cap rules/implications and such long ago, so maybe it's not possible to keep Liles up for any length of time?  ???

I'd of course defer to Busta, CTB and LK, but doesn't this suggest Bozak and/or Lupul will be going on the IR?  If not, how is there room to fit Liles in?

Bozak has been placed on IR, but, they already had a free roster spot available. With Kulemin and Fraser still on LTIR, they had space to fit the $925K they were saving on Liles under the cap temporarily. If they want him up longer term, that would require either Bozak requiring LTIR or another roster move to be made.

Bozak was placed on the IR (although not LTIR, so there's no cap relief at this point). So with Liles the Leafs have 22 players on their roster with Bozak on the IR and Kulemin/Fraser on LTIR. So they're fine in terms of roster space.

Cap wise though, things could get a little tricky. As it stands, with Kulemin and Fraser on LTIR there's enough room for Liles on the roster. Fraser doesn't sound like he will return during this 3-game road trip, so we will continue to get some relief there. But if Kulemin returns, I think Toronto would have to send down Carter Ashton if they wanted to keep Liles with the team. I think if they sent say Bodie down instead they would still be a tad over.

And once both Fraser and Kulemin return Liles will have to be sent back down, unless a trade is made to make some more room cap-wise.

I'm pretty sure Bozak has been placed on the IR so that frees up more than enough space to cover Liles on this trip.  I have a feeling Ranger might be sitting here for a game or two.

Whether or not the plan is to showcase Liles for a trade, I think he sees some ice time on this trip. And, I agree, Ranger should be the one who sits for a game or two to make room for him.

You guys are my Distributed Brain on all things cap-related.  I don't need to know, because I know you, and YOU know.

You may refer to me as Goldbrick McFate from now on.

IR doesn't free up any cap space, but does free up a roster spot. Cap space comes into effect if a player is placed on long-term injury reserve (LTIR.) Something along those lines.

I keep a copy of the CBA handy just in case.

I'm happy that JML will likely get into the lineup on this back-to-back - he's still an NHL calabre Dman. If he proves to be capable, EDM and CAL are the most likely teams interested in the league, too.
