Luongo

The latest highly dubious rumour making the rounds is that Gillis asked for Gardiner, Franson, Colborne, Kadri and the Leafs' 2013 1st rounder.

Who tweeted this?

In the end, I don't think Florida is interested in making this deal, so Toronto is his only option. Am I the only one that thinks it would just be a bad move for Florida?

Florida had Theodore and Clemmensen next year with Markstrom waiting in the wings so I'd say they're better than the Leafs in the goalie position right now.

I guess it depends on whether Florida think Markstrom is their future number 1.

I'd be wary if I were Tallon.

If I was Tallon - both. Markstrom has some injury issues and, well, Luongo has been well covered.

I don't know too much about Markstrom, other than he is well regarded. Luongo is just not a move a team makes this early into a rebuild IMO.

It's kind of funny how butt hurt Nyuck fans on HFBoards are about the fact the Leafs aren't as interested as they want and aren't willing to part with the pieces they want.

Soak it in and enjoy it. I'm still waiting for the inevitable "package" the get for him, because I'm banking on it being a real laugher.

Are the Panthers still rebuilding? They are pretty loaded with prospects / blue-chippers.

Gillis must be loving this - he's really got Burke by the cajones.
Not really. I think all of Leafland liked Luongo because he represented an upgrade in net without commanding a ton of assets in return. Instead, Gillis wants more than he paid for him originally. Gillis is the one who's going to look like an idiot if he has two starters making $9+m while needing to upgrade other areas.

totally agreed..i was never all that sold on luongo to begin with and that's without having to give up anything for him

So Gillis says they've been taking offers on Luongo, but also says they haven't talked to him about where he will go?

I think Gillis is just blowing smoke about the whole thing, for whatever reason.

The term rebuild has been skewed all over the place lately, so I'm having a hard time pinning down a definition. But I thought they were. They added a whole bunch of older filler last July and made the playoffs, but how many of those prospects have made an impact? Have they simply retooled and now they are going to be a contender every year? I doubt it.

So, your guess is as good as any.

What a knob, if that is actually true. Is that even serious?

My guess is something got lost in translation there, but, if not, that's 5 young assets - 4 of which are of the high value variety - for a good but declining asset that comes with an excessive commitment. I'm not sure even Gillis is that nuts.

But I thought in that deal Gillis had offered to let Burke use his Tamper Detector-o-matic 5000 for 2 weeks each year?

You got a lotta BALLS to say that MISTER!

But seriously... you seriously think that?  Burke isn't the one sitting around with $11 mil in goalies, one of whom he can't move.

I think its a possibility yeah its no secret that they sincerely don't like each other.

Schneider is signed - that was the only landmine Gillis really had to worry about.  He doesn't have to worry about re-signing anyone of significance, they still have 5M in cap space...they could sit Luongo out until November / December if they had to (don't think it will get to that though)...looking at all the intangibles I'd say he's dead serious when he says he's going to take as much time as it needs to make a deal that benefits the organization.

well that has to piss luongo off.  Burke isn't backing down either.  Unless Florida caves it is a stalemate.
