Luongo

Ok, thanks busta... so, Komisarek it is, eh?

He seems like the most logical option, though, the Leafs are in pretty good shape for summer 2013 and Komi would only have one season left on his deal. I suppose it would depend on how guys look if there's any sort of 12/13 season. If the Leafs use it, it's probably Komisarek, but it could be Liles if he struggles, Komisarek doesn't suck as much, Gardiner keeps developing and Rielly/Percy/Blacker are close or the team believes Ranger/Kostka are viable candidates for a secondary offensive D role.

If Burke doesn't buy out Komisarek, I could see Burke trading for someone to buy out (obviously not Luongo.)

I guess that would depend on how the buy outs would be structured. That may end up not being allowed.

True. If it is though, it might be a useful thing to do.

A loophole discovered before they even get the new CBA work out?

I'm not sure I'd classify that as a "loophole." It's really just an option for teams with cap space to acquire something and it wouldn't be a transaction that would break the "spirit" of the CBA like say, some of these front-loaded mega-deals.

Either way, Luongo would be an expensive buy-out. He's stilled owed about $40M over the life of his deal, though he's lost about $3M this season already.

FWIW, if you go back, you'll see I wasn't suggesting we do that with Luongo.

If anything, though, this potential compliance buyout probably decreases Luongo's value.  If he's not traded before the off-season, almost certainly he will be the one who is bought out.  Then you can get him at a better (shorter) deal costing no assets.

The only downside of this is he can pick and choose where he wants to go.  And I'm positive he'd take less money to go to either Florida or Tampa Bay.

There's a good chance the 'Nyucks would use the buy out on Ballard instead, as they probably feel he has even less trade value than Luongo.

I know. I meant it more in the way of louisstamos's thoughts above. As in, that's a hell of a financial hit if Vancouver were to buy him out.

But, if there is provision for trading cap space/salary, then it might make more sense for them to just trade him and keep some of the cap hit/salary.

Oh, absolutely.

You're right here. Luongo has some trade value while Ballard or Booth have litle to none. Luongo will not be bought out.

You would figure that Booth would carry some sort of trade value. He does pot quite a few goals.

He's really rubbed the tree huggers and granola chewers wrong out here with his pics on twitter showing the critters he's stabbed with his bow and arrow. The vegans are also choked and probably planning on throwing cabbage at his next time they see him. Oohh - hey maybe some brussell sprouts with slingshots!

But just because the fans don't like him, doesn't mean his trade value is worthless or very low. His salary is a bit on the high side but he's a feisty player that pots 20-30 goals a year. His value has got to be half decent. Ballard on the other hand....
