Mammoth vs. Leafs - Oct. 13th, 9:00pm - TSN4

Bummer.

But they didn't deserve a point TBH.

Bright spots: Matthews, the PK, the overall ability to hang in and come back.
Dimmer spots: 41, 95, 44

Feels like we're back the early "core 4" era where the team is almost never out of a game, and the games are exciting to watch again.

Fun game to watch. Thought we might get overtime. Matthews and Nylander look good. Team is still really disjointed in the d zone. They have no idea how to break a forecheck.

Man that 5th goal against was killer. Knew that was going to end up being the difference.

Shot attempts with the top line on the ice were 13-1 Leafs. Roslovic should have had a pair, Marchenko was flying through the neutral zone with the puck, and Matthews had that vintage "I want the puck, I get the puck" feel to his game again.

On the flip side the 3rd line kinda got owned, going 0-12 in shot attempts. Sissons looked much better in his shifts on the 4th line while McKenna made up for his rough first two periods with a goal and looking more dangerous in the 3rd.

It's encouraging that they didn't just roll over and quit.

It's just not sustainable to need to score six goals to win a game.

It was a game we should have won, Stolarz let in some softies again and we couldn't catch up, on the plus side we do look better than last year.

I think they know how but often can't because of the speed differential the forecheckers are coming in with. Utah doesn't have the star power at the same luminosities as the Leafs top 6, but they have tremendous forward depth of speed and length and they did a good job forcing breakdowns.

What I see from good teams that break out well is that their forwards are in position to soft-interfere with forechecks to soak off a couple ticks of speed, giving their defenders an extra moment to make a good decision.

Their sort outs on zone entries is a bit of a mess as the D tend to sag back well below the dots and the Fs aren't picking up trailers fast enough because of that additional distance.
Goalies need to have these sort of straight on looks though.

Of course the one time Rielly feels brave enough to step up, he gets turnstiled immediately (really nice play by But that Stolarz should've been more focused on).

Nevermind that MR44 is at the scene of each crime.

It felt like when Stolarz was making saves last night that he was still pretty lucky on a few of them. He made the one really nice cross crease save in the 2nd period but his 5 hole was wide open. He was leaving a lot of empty space which for a massive goalie is just not great.

The defence is definitely a problem with/without Tanev. They do move the puck up the ice but man there are a lot of fumbles where they can't make basic passes. I don't love that Raddysh is taking after Rielly and doing the flop on the ice defensive move.

Another solid game from Matthews. The 4th line I thought had some really solid shifts where they hemmed Utah in the defensive zone but at the same time the bottom six seems to be really quiet most nights. I know the 3rd line has had good games too but it just feels like there is very little chance that the bottom 6 is going to score goals.

I didn't catch the whole game but goaltending and defense really let us down. Stolarz in particular looked atrocious and I would've pulled him after the 3rd goal. You could tell pretty early on he didn't have his best stuff and truthfully, he's looked kind of bad for two games in a row. 4 goals should be enough to win most games.

Willy has a pretty heavy pass and did well to find the lane and get this through the sticks. I think Marchenko anticipated would be a tipping weight pass (see blade angle aiming for the upper blocker side) and sort of got caught between options (one-time vs soft catch and release) when he saw the zip.

I think Marchenko has skated well for the most part pushing pucks into the right zone, but is starting to feel the difference between being the only offensive option on Columbus to being just one of 5 or 6. Several big goals on this road trip came with him being the decoy drawing defenders off the seam.

He'll get the next one.
