I'm pretty much with you, LK.  I am skeptical of McMann being able to reliably produce offensively.  I just think it's unlikely that a regular NHLer emerges at his age.  He certainly deserves the chance to prove me wrong, though.

I might not bet on McMann to score 20 goals like he was on pace to over 82 games last season, but he's arguably the best forechecker on the team right now so he should be able to carve out a reliable role on the team through that type of play.

I could see him as an effective 4th-liner, I guess.  But we have to work around Treliving's albatross of Reaves.

Rattling off all the talented guys Matthews gets to play with just brings back memories of who Mats had.  Outside of Almo, they were all hardworking, but pretty ordinary, guys.  A few rose a bit above that level, Steve Thomas for example.  But nothing of the talent levels of a Marner, a Tavares, a Nylander, except Mogs.

I love Almo but man if only he was just more durable at that stage of his career.

I don't even recall anything happening in the preseason game he played, so I'm assuming he got a puck to the face in practice. Literally no one said anything about anything until just now.

INJURIES - what I've been able to gather ..

NHL Roster Hopefuls
Matthews (upper body) day to day
Nylander (head) day to day
Jarnkrok (lower body) day to day
Tavares (leg) out to at least Oct 9th
Hakanpaa (knee) out to at least Oct 9th
Dewar (summer shoulder surgery) maybe returns by start of season Oct 9th

Likely AHL or lower leagues
Steeves (lower body) day to day
Clifford (upper body) ?
Danford (concussion) on ice but not in practices
Mermis - (jaw surgery) out to Oct 16th
Minten (high ankle sprain) "probably talking weeks"
Mastrosimone (shoulder) ?
Bengtsson (groin) ?

For those of us who can't stand watching preseason hockey Anthony breaks down some system changes the team is already seeing under Berube here.

The more I see 67 play the less I'm inclined to have him on the roster.  I'd rather have someone with speed and utility like Lorentz.

I think it all depends on what Pacioretty you get. If he puts 10-15 goals he's valuable. I just don't know how likely that is.

Seems like a mixed performance.
First game and practices leading up to it, he seemed pretty good
Next game, bad giveaway that led to a goal against and not very good.
I haven't seen much of him beyond that.
So I'm not sure.

I like what I've seen of Lorentz in a 4th line role over what I recall of Dewar

Countless times, we've seen good preseasons fizzle out after 10-20 games.
McCabe was barely a 5th dman to start last season - lousy start after a rough playoff but played better as the season progressed

Robertson didn't show much his first preseason game but showed much more the last two games.

Bit of a follow-up to this:

Matthews and Nylander both practiced with the main group today and seem fine. Tavares and Jarnkrok to follow them.

Mirtle said today he's anticipating that Hakanpaa and Dewar start the season on LTIR (would confirm them to miss all of October).

Would that leave room for Patch/Robertson/Lorentz?

Assuming Pacioretty signs the expected league minimum or close to it deal (with additional bonuses), then yes. It would leave room for all those guys with a full 23-man roster.

Of course cuts would need to come when/if everyone is healthy.

Haven't heard Liljegren's name talked about much so far.  Makes me wonder is he's being shopped.

North-south will be an interesting change from the Dubas/Babcock/Keefe years.  I hope they also emphasize south-north hockey, too ? that is, the forwards really committing to getting back quickly on defense.

No surprise. I'd do the same thing and posted about it before. They're using LTIR to buy depth and they're saving wearing Hakanpaa's knee for the games that matter more. They kind of get a 25 man roster. With the age of this roster, there are bound to be more injuries.

If they're keeping Pacioretty (NHL minimum plus bonuses) and send Cowan to the CHL (or special request to play in AHL if that can be done), they can sign Lorentz at NHL minimum and unless I forgot someone, they're under the cap with Timmins as a 7th dman - with a 23 man NHL roster.

Hopefully, Murray's preseason .833 save%, 3.47 GAA helps him clear waivers. (I don't think he was that bad)

Steeves, Rafai (if he doesn't beat out righty Timmins), Myers, Abruzzese & Mermis will probably be exposed to waivers.

Timmins was playing with Benoit today as the 6th dman ...
Nylander was sort of playing wing with Domi - they seem to be waffling on Nylander as center ...

Flip Liljegren's $3 mil for a 3rd line center? (old rumour ...)

Maybe not right now, but if the Leafs are confident in Hakanpaa's knee (big if there) and if Liljegren isn't able to carve out a legitimate role on the team somewhere (not as big of an if), I could see him being shopped once the D is healthy.

Now that clears some cap space but it doesn't really clear up the forward log jam.

Yeah. Can?t imagine anything is imminent on the D side of things, unless it?s part of a bigger deal.
