Marlies Talk 13/14

A crowd of 6525 (including your truly) takes in the Marlies home opener against the defending Calder Cup champs from Grand Rapids this afternoon. The Marlies kill off an almost 7 minute PP late in the 3rd to force OT and win it courtesy of captain Trevor Smith. TJ Brennan had the other 3 Marlies goals. They are back in action tomorrow at Ricoh against Lake Erie.

Thanks for the updates.  They are appreciated!

Pretty impressive debut for Brennan last night. 3 goals and 4 pts in the season opener isn't too shabby.

I think he could have shot for and scored the OT winner too but he threw their new captain a bone. Solid effort.

Leafs call up 2 players today, but Brennan isn't one of them. Headed to the ACC are Jamie Devane and captain Trevor Smith.

6 points in 2 games for Brennan.

Named AHL player of the week.

Gotta think he gets a look sooner rather than later.

I've been saying that he should be on the team since training camp. His low salary was a big reason why but performances like this aren't hurting his chances either.

It won't happen until Rielly is returned to junior though, if he's returned at all.

Brennan has 10 points in 3 games.  His career high in goals in 16 and his career high in points is 39.  What a start.

I have to wonder how long they'll keep him down there. I was obviously pretty disappointed they didn't give him a game when he was called up, but I would have benched him for Ranger and Ranger played pretty well in that Nashville game. Still, got a group that contains 5 "offensive defencemen", it's a little odd that they only have 1 goal among themselves.

2 hat tricks in his first 3 games and 10 points is pretty jaw dropping from the back end in any league.  Lets see only 24 years old with good size at 6'1 214 lbs and signed at a cap friendly 600k.  You would have to think he is eons above the AHL in terms of skill at this point and should be on some club right now if not a fit on this Leafs team.

SCOUTING REPORT
Assets: A good skater who possesses very good offensive ability, he can be a major asset on the power play. Also moves the puck with aplomb.
Flaws: Makes mistakes when he's pressured with the puck. Needs to avoid taking bad penalties in the defensive zone, as well as polish up his play without the puck.
Career Potential: Offensive defenseman with some upside.

Interesting. I remember hearing some pretty decent things about him. As far as 4th line centres go of course. And it makes sense. Looking over the Marlies roster they only have 3 centres listed right now: McKegg, Carrick, and Crescenzi. All 21 years old. Smith is of course the top centre on the team but the Leafs won't be afraid to call him up when injuries hit. So if a centre ever went down on either team the Marlies would be in a bit of trouble. Kenny Ryan I know has played some centre in the past but he's injured right now.

I'm planning to be in Toronto in early December. Marlies have a game on the Saturday I'm there (Leafs are in Ottawa I think). Is it worth coming along to a game? What are crowds like etc? The game is against the Bulldogs.

It's no Leafs game but for however much money you spend, imo, it can't be beat. Great seats everywhere, crowd is half decent. I remember seeing them play the Bulldogs a few years back and was heckling Halak.

I think you'll be happy you went.
