Marlies Talk 13/14

I'm planning to be in Toronto in early December. Marlies have a game on the Saturday I'm there (Leafs are in Ottawa I think). Is it worth coming along to a game? What are crowds like etc? The game is against the Bulldogs.

It's no Leafs game but for however much money you spend, imo, it can't be beat. Great seats everywhere, crowd is half decent. I remember seeing them play the Bulldogs a few years back and was heckling Halak.

I think you'll be happy you went.

I think I'd be happy I went too, just need to convince the other half she will be as well, took enough convincing to get her to the Leafs game  ;D

Leivo's been sent back down to the Marlies. For a 20-year old in his first professional season I thought that he was alright. Especially since he's not exactly a can't miss prospect.

I'm a little surprised that Smith hasn't been sent back too. With Clarkson back (and potentially McLaren) I can't see him in the line-up. I'm sure it's just a matter of time but the Marlies play tonight and could probably use their captain.

My guess is he's sent back once McLaren is officially cleared for action. He may still be needed on Friday if that doesn't happen.

Leivo has been a pleasant suprise a full year on the top line of the Marlies will give him some time to develop but I sure liked what I saw in raw speed and talent.

8 straight games as a scratch for Jesse Blacker.

What's up with that? First I heard of it.

The Marlies have a pretty deep blueline especially with Liles and Brennan down there, and Spott doesn't seem like a big fan. A 4-1 start also means Spott doesn't seem in a hurry to tinker with his initial line-up. Kyle Cicerella breaks it down a little more here:

Thanks. I don't know if it's in his best interest for development though, the kid needs to play.

I'm sure Liles will get moved once the other teams read about his hot rim skills.    :P

It would be nice, as I was heavily in favour of the Leafs using their compliance buyout on him. It's not like they couldn't afford it, I thought the buyout structure was pretty good also.

Best scenario would have been to buy out Liles with the compliance and buy out Komisarek with a non-compliance. Live with 2 years of Komi on the books at a reduced rate vs. Liles buried like he is or 8 years on the books.

I think they must have felt there was a deal to be had out there for Liles or something. Maybe (hopefully) there still is.

I would have agreed with that avenue if the buyout would have resulted in a different breakdown, but the 850k or whatever in the first two years makes it a no-brainer for me and a good gamble that the cap would have increased enough to make the 2.7 million in the third year irrelevant, or at least inconsequential.

perhaps Liles, Blacker, Riemer and a first for Yakapov

That's way to much for Yakapov...the way he is playing his value will continue to drop every game. Last night he was on the top line with Hall out and was terrible. I'd take the first out maybe but I really dislike Yakapov's attitude and thing we'd be better off without the headache....

I watched a bit of the Marlie game the other day and saw Brennan shot from the right point only to have the puck go a little wide of the net with no one to pick up the rebound on the other side. The announcer said this had happened 4 times and this was just the second period.  I wonder what Spott is teaching as this is a rudimentary problem. No sooner had the announcer pointed this out than the Marlies had 6 men on the ice. And very very obvious. I am off base here. I would like to know what others think of this coach?

Planning to watch the Marlies game tonight via the AHL online on demand service. Anything or anyone I should look out for in particular?

I'm also a bit intrigued by the Utica arena. It looks very old school!

Check out their centre depth. Report back to us.

Ha ha  ha ... ;D

Only almost a period gone, but Smithson has stood out so far. He has plenty of NHL experience. Wonder if he could do a job? Definitely a bottom 6 job though.
