Marlies Talk

Marlies up 2-1 after trailing 1 zip.  Scrivens made two huge glove saves to stop it being 2-0 Heat.  Hamilton with his first on the PP tied it up and then Frattin nearly killed a guy with an epic hit and scored the go ahead goal on the same shift with a hell of a snipe.

I haven't been able to watch any of the games, but from the sounds of it Frattin is having a huge playoffs. Hopefully he can translate that physicality to the NHL, because I don't think it really showed up there.
He has created at least two goals this post season from physical play and is at least a ppg in the playoffs so far. There where a couple of times he did it In the NHL, I think as he gets stronger and more confident we will see more of it, we could have another Kulemin type here, with perhaps a little more physicality and a better shot, with less defensive ability.

frattin is awesome..i get more excited about him as a player with each game i see...

it's nice that the marlies are so good at the penalty kill..but i don't think they should show it off so often ...next they'll try killing a 4 minute 2 man disadvantage.

Another great kill and then an empty net goal for Kadri, sweet.

that whole sequence was so crazy..i wonder why they were so hesitant to put the goalie back in after the penalty was over..it was like the coach just said screw it

Yeah, someone messed up for sure. It was weird seeing an empty net at even strength so early in the third, I mean they were trying to come back and kind of screwed up their 5 on 3 but I was surprised they pulled the goalie at all.

the whole 3rd period was surreal ..i don't remember the last time i've seen a winning team played so undisciplined in the playoffs ...like it really felt like they were daring the heat to score.. anyway..they had to win it and they did ..

i wonder if scott will get suspended

I didn't see the hit or a replay but it didn't sound like anything more than a major penalty, the opposing player was ok?

You're right though, it was almost like the Marlies were daring them to score, good thing to be confident in your pk and all but holy cow.

I'll take the win, Holzer first star! Scrivens was pretty good, probably would have had him as the first star but he received the second.

yeah i agree..despite the final score being 5-1 there were a lot of opportunities for the heat to go ahead by more than one and he stonewalled them every time ...in the first period the marlies were a turnover machine and if he hadn't of been sharp the score could have been well out of reach...

yeah ..10 powerplays and 3 5 on 3's ...that'll definitely up their penalty kill numbers ... not that i want them to give up that many opportunites again ..but the marlies just ooze confidence on the pk ...in fact some of their best offensive chances in this series have come a man down ..i just hope eakins gets them to knock off the silly stuff by next game

Managed to get to the game last night and despite a small crowd there was a good atmosphere at the arena.

The third period was crazy I disciplined but the ref was beyond incompetent.  Scrivens got run over three times without a call and I don't know if they showed it on TV but on one of them, the ref was staring off at nothing, and only turned to look at Scrivens when the cloud booed and he just shook his head as if he was accusing him of falling on his own.

Some of the penalties were incredibly weak but Abbotsford had no clue what they were doing against the Marlies PK.  D'Amigo actually shocked me at how good he was at pressing the point.  And Holzer is NHL ready.  Korbinian and Fraser were really solid as a shutdown pair.

Blacker was probably the weakest player making more than a few mental gaffes but I think you can see his potential, he just doesn't have the mental game down to be on the cusp of the big club.

Rosehill kind of did his job.  He got clipped and got a retaliation penalty that I think was pretty cheap from the refs.  And the kneeing major, I don't have a problem with it but the Heat players were diving all over the ice and I really felt like that was another one of those.  The guy stayed on the ice just long enough to see the penalty and then magically bound up.

On the Taylor empty net goal, I think that one goes all on the coach.  Taylor was yelling and waiving his arm to see if he should go back out and the coach ignored him.

I do hope the Leafs were watching Marlies how to kill penalties, especially those long 5 on 3

By playing against an AHL team? ;)

Well, it was an AHL team against another, however the system worked and for the Marlies it has been working the whole year. If am not mistaken they were No. 1 in penalty killing, therefore my claim that they have to do something right (especialy if the Leafs were 29th). If the Marlies system is right, which apparently is, it does not matter if it is AHL vs AHL. If the system is properly executed at the NHL level it should work too or at least bring somewhat better result. What else do you not undersatand?

You really don't get jokes.

To be fair, he's coming of an injury layoff. I thought he looked a little rusty too but before he was hurt he was a lot better than he was last night and the previous game.
