Marlies Talk

Blacker was probably the weakest player making more than a few mental gaffes but I think you can see his potential, he just doesn't have the mental game down to be on the cusp of the big club.

To be fair, he's coming of an injury layoff. I thought he looked a little rusty too but before he was hurt he was a lot better than he was last night and the previous game.

Yeah, he missed just over a month.

And full marks for it.  It's wasn't meant as a slight of his abilities, probalby more than anything a positive remark on the rest of the defense.  Maybe Mikus was also kind of uninspiring but he made a few nice plays himself.

Gardiner was good but not spectacular, so I don't know if his game is just going through another swoon due to the high work-load compared to his last year in college.

I thought Holzer was above and beyond the best player on the ice.  He's not a future top pairing defenseman so it wasn't a case of a guy being "too good" for the AHL, but it was the kind of game from a guy who was just making the right play all of the time.

Its promising to see that the players leading the Marlies in scoring these playoffs are mostly the NHL prospects and not the carreer AHLers.

Games 3 should be streamed here hopefully:

Game doesn't start until 10pm though.

No wonder then when I tried to stream the game at 1901 which was the start time on the site it didn't work.  Btw we've fallen a long way when there's no HNIC on Sat night.

Dupuis 3-1 after 2.

Goals are up on the video section of Mapleleafs.com.

Abbotsford went with Leland Irving in net tonight, he was the number one before Taylor stole his job towards the end of the season.  Seems like they are pinning the Game 2 loss on him.

Ben Scrivens on allowing just 4 goals in last 4 games after letting in 6 in first two games of Calder Cup playoffs: "We talked about that with Frankie and decided not to change anything... this is what happens if you listen to Frankie."

Scrivens seems like a fairly intelligent and aware young man from that interview. Mueller was interesting too, he came across similarly to me.

Good game for the Marlies, great to see them have some success, bodes well.

Colborne and Rosehill are both hurt and will not play tonight. Orr and David Broll will both join the line-up to give the Marlies an injection of toughness. Matt Lashoff will also rejoin the line-up after missing 6 months of hockey. Lashoff is arguably the teams top defenceman if he's 100%. Not sure who comes out on the blueline.

I guess if you are going to put him back in the lineup, sooner rather than later is better, but I wonder if Lashoff should be in the lineup at all given that he has only been able to play 9 games all year.  Is throwing him into the postseason line a reduced role really the best option at this point, given how many decent prospects we have on the team?  I think it's probably likely that it is Blacker that comes out for Lashoff, so instead of giving valuable development time to Blacker/Percy, the minutes are going to go to a guy who was deemed low enough on the depth chart to not factor in to the defense at all, and given that the Leafs have Holzer, the two young guys just hitting the Marlies, are hopefully going to be in on Schultz and/or Suter, Lashoff really doesn't have an NHL future with the Leafs.

That being said, if he is actually 100%, he very well could be our #1 defenseman and would really solidify the 2nd pairing (I wouldn't split Holzer-Fraser up at this point).
