Marlies Talk

CarltonTheBear said:
There should only be room for one of Steckel or Zigo, and I think Steckel has cemented his spot on the roster. With that said, Zigo said today he hopes management wants to bring him back next season, even if it's just to play for the Marlies.

Agreed... I'd love to see Ziggy spell off Steckel if/when he's banged up.

Looks like Mikus is off to Europe...

"What is your future in Toronto? "I just got a proposal to extend the contract, but I refused." Why? "because I am close to closing a contract with the team in Europe."

You'll have to translate the page, some interesting musings about the Calder cup final and such in there.

Yep, this is what it says.

Hate to lose a guy but realistically he doesn't have much NHL upside, if any at all. Didn't really elevate his game in the last couple of seasons like Holzer did.

I was hoping for the best for him but his development foundered last year. Still, I thought he acquitted himself well in the playoffs and wish him luck.

To be honest he is one of the guys I'd have considered moving out no matter what. Time to focus on some other more clearly defined 'prospects' with upside. Like some of have said, it was quite clear he didn't have another level to go to.

I'd probably not invite one of Fraser or Gysbers back either, at least not if Holzer is still on the team.

Ooooo, I dunno Wigwal, I thought Fraser played well during his short time so far with the Marlies, and he has NHL experience too.

The Leafs only have Holzer and Blacker signed to contracts right now on the Marlies defence, with no junior prospects likely to make the jump to pro yet. Percy has another year in the OHL left, and Granberg is staying in Sweden for another season. So I'd have no problem bringing Fraser, Gysbers, and Lashoff all back on 1-year deals.

Opinions! Much like a$$holes, we all have one and some are dirtier than others! ;)

Oh and Carlton, I figured Percy and Granberg might play for the Marlies, based on your superior knowledge on the matter, bring those others back if we don't have any prospects coming through the system to replace them.

Too bad about Mikus. He had a pretty good season. Handily led the team in +/- with a +21 in the regular season. Second among dmen in the playoffs with +4. In lower levels of hockey, he put up some good offensive numbers for a dman but that didn't continue as he moved up. Maybe that's a part of why he didn't get further up the depth chart.

Can't say I blame him. I'd say AHLers Lashoff, Fraser (vet) and Holzer were ahead of him in terms of how the team decision makers regarded his AHL play. Some might debate Gysbers. Percy & Blacker are more highly regarded talents coming up behind him. And with a close to set Leafs 7 man D that includes playoff teammate Gardiner, he'd be 11th or so at best on the depth chart. Eakins seemed to tout Holzer much more. That had to be discouraging.

A Euro contract is probably considerably more attractive financially for him at this point.

I didn't see lots of Marlies games but I must confess that when I did, I didn't notice him that much. That's not always a bad thing for a defensive dman. He's got good size but like so many, didn't use it physically. And I'm not sure his skating was good enough for the NHL.

I don't think it's a gigantic loss or anything close to that. But I'm often a little sorry for the prospects who fall short.

His departure does give Burke a free slot in his 50 contract limit - which I'm sure they can use.

Hey now, what about the poor colostomy folks with no blind eye? I guess they could be a cleaner, freakier version... ;)

Just to clarify, Percy is actually ineligible to play in the AHL this upcoming season because of his age, so it's the OHL or NHL for him (OHL obviously). And the Leafs had to sign Granberg by June 1st or they would have lost his rights and he would have re-entered the draft like Olden, Brodin, and Nicholls. So it's not really an indication that he'll be coming over. A reliable Swedish source on twitter also reported that he would be staying in Sweden for another year.

Lashoff said just yesterday that he was still hoping to work towards getting back into the NHL and that he hoped the Leafs management was pleased enough with how he performed after his injury to give him another shot. You know Eakins would love to have him back, and from the sounds of it his opinion does stand for quite a bit. So I'm a little bit surprised that he'd sign a contract in Europe so quickly. We'll see I guess.

He's more of a loss than Mikus in terms of playing ability in my opinion but may be leaving for similar reasons.

That's too bad. I was really hoping he'd come back. If we cleared out some bodies on the blueline I wouldn't even have been opposed to him being our 7th defenceman.

In a shutdown role, Holzer might .. have an edge. But I like Lashoff's versatility to help offensively - perfect for a 7th dman role. Ignoring Gardiner, and assuming he's close to fully recovered from his injury, he'd be at the top of my depth list for the Marlies D. He's pretty good in my opinion and started really coming into his own last year so it isn't a fluke. He stepped into the playoffs and seemed to take over from where he left off after missing the regular season.

If the report is accurate, I think they'll miss him.

His versatility, and the fact that I think Holzer would still benefit more from getting top minutes in the AHL as opposed to spending time in the pressbox are the reasons why I'd prefer Lashoff as the 7th defenceman.  He looked very comfortable in the NHL when he got some games in at the end of the 2010/11 season.
