Marlies Talk

He's almost 28 and has 2 NHL games under his belt, that screams "career minor leaguer" to me.

That didn't stop the Leafs from bringing up Kostka who at 27 should have been the same thing.  He's suddenly a 32 minute a game, Pronger like workhorse.

Or Joey Crabb, 29, who won a job on Washington's roster. Crabb had 29 NHL games before Toronto called him up. Keith Aucoin was 29 before he played 1/2 a season in the NHL. Although rare, it happens.

Hamilton intrigued me because of his size and he could do a number of things the Leafs could use. But I think his lack of physical play hinders him - which is frustrating to see from a 230 lb forward.

EAKINS: MARLIES' HAMILTON KNOCKING ON LEAFS' DOOR
Since joining the Marlies, team captain Hamilton has steadily improved as he gets deeper into his 20s. He's a big guy -- 6'2", 230 pounds -- who perhaps didn't get much of a look from the 2013 Leafs due to NHL's shortened training camp, a result of the lockout.

?I personally believe Ryan Hamilton is right there knocking on the door,? Eakins said. ?He?s right in the mix there. I think it goes to show you, sometimes we forget that players progress at different rates. I?m constantly asked about two or three players that are all very young, and for some reason everybody forgets there?s other guys there too that are still trying to make it.?

Marlies sign a goelie MacIntyre, the AHL veteran. No surprise there as Rynaas is with the Leafs. What surprised me that he played today ahead of Owuya. I thought him only as an insurance hoping Mark Owuya gets an extended look. MacIntyre played well and got a first win. Interesting as to where Owuya fits in the Leafs plans.

There goes some of the Marlies' offence.

Well, Marlies will be hit hard - not just Keith Aucoin going to Long Island, but no Kadri, no Frattin, no Gardiner, most porbably no Frazer or Holzer or Kostka. It is opprtunity for Scott, McKegg, D?AMigo.

It's a huge opportunity for Colborne to step up. If he doesn't impress in the second half this season I have very little hope for him.

I agree him and carter aston need to step it up.  Maybe having some many career ahler's has taken away the ice time from real prospects like these two.

I think that hurt during the lockout. Since Jan 1, Colborne been a ppg player and +2 over 19 games. Some of his slow start had to do with his fight to get quality ice time.

Next year he's no longer waiver exempt so they'll have to make a decision on him by the end of next Sept training camp. The next callup for a center is probably Connolly so we may not see him this year in the NHL unless they make a trade.

From what I've heard about his injury, that also had a big part in his decline in play. It sounds like it was a very difficult injury for him and that it wasn't quite dealt with in the right way, so far as making the decision to fix it early and not try to play through it.

todays toronto star article said that scar tissue cleared itself out of the wrist around christmas time and that was what made him 100% pain free and back to full mobility.

so thats good news

I'd like to see Colbourne up for 5 games to centre Kessel and JVR and see what he can do with those guys. Certainly a big physical presence that Bozak lacks and with his injury he learned to dish the puck very well. Just a test mind you

The Marlies are 6-11 since the NHL has resumed play.  They are a depleted squad and one that unless they can turn things around will miss the playoffs despite staying afloat so far by relying on such a great first half.

They're still leading the division and have 4 games in hand on the 2nd and 3rd teams in the division.  They've just got to hold off Rochester over the next 23 games, who are 3 pts back with the same number of GP.

Yes, but they are playing brutal and they are not getting any goaltending, totally uninspired hockey.  It wouldn't take a whole lot to fall out of the picture at the current rate.

Drew MacIntyre was named Player of the Week in the AHL: 2-0-0, .965 SV%.

Yeah. He's turned out to be a pretty good last minute pick up for Nonis. I can't wait to see Rielly suit up for the team. It should be interesting to see him in action.
