Matthew Lombardi update/information thread

So given this is a Lombardi thread and not a Kaberle thread, to bring us back on topic, with the Kadri out, do you think Lombardi squeezes into the third line winger role or is Frattin a more likely contender.  I think Lombardi-Bozak-Armstrong would be solid third line.

Maybe... Though Lombardi-Dupuis-Brown could be an interesting 4th.

If Lombardi is up to speed, that'd be my preference for a prototypical third line, actually - A solid two-way centre who's good in the dot, a hard-nosed winger who works the boards and shows decent offensive instincts, and a responsible speedster to pressure the opposition.  However, it's expecting a lot of Lombardi to come back and fill that role immediately, so I'd think the whole "start on the 4th line and work up" scenario is still the most likely, with Frattin getting the 3rd line spot for now.

That would be a huge waste of his talents to keep him on the fourth line for the whole year.

Of course it would be. I'm only thinking short term.

Expected to play tonight (with Rosehill & Crabb) according to Paul Hendrick on twitter

I know he's going to the minors after tonight, but is there a legitimate reason that Joey Crabb is still in camp?

Injuries?

And so the team could practice with 5 lines instead of 4 and 3/4. Maybe it's just a little reward for his play last season.

He's an extra body so that the team doesn't have to ice all the regulars in meaningless games. And, Brown wasn't healthy enough to get into a game until yesterday.

Our forward lines are so depleted that it's laughable.

Lupul-Lombardi-Kessel
Frattin-Crosbovski-Malklemin
Brown-Dupuis-Armstrongov
Crabb-Zigomanis-Rosehill

Injuries: Bozak, Connolly, Kadri,
Suspended: MacArthur
Not in game: Dupuis, Boyce.

I'd really like to see what Lombardi has got.

Yeah, but, pretty much that entire 4th line won't make the opening night roster. I get the impression that Bozak and Connolly are healthy enough to play, but, the team doesn't want to risk them re-aggravating whatever has kept them out - I think they'll be good to go for Thursday - and Boyce and Orr will round out the 13 forwards until MacArthur's suspension has been dealt with.

Ps You have Dupuis on the 3rd line and not in the game. He can't be both, right?

I think I'd rather see Colborne in there than Orr.

“@ryantologist: If Lombardi is actually fit enough to skate top line minutes by tonight, this has become the most hilarious trade in a long, long time.”

He's got a point...

As the 12th/13th forward? No thanks. Honestly, Colborne didn't outplay anyone else who is poised to make the final roster and is much better served with the Marlies getting lots of ice time than getting 4th line minutes/pressbox duty with the Leafs, which is where he'd be - and, barring injuries, where he'd deserve to be right now.

Have to wonder what Poile thinks about all this. I still feel quite nervous ( well as extensions go ) for Matthew. Here's hoping he doesn't block a shot with his brain bucket or suffer a fool.

No... I'd want him to play.

Well, that's a problem, because he didn't earn the opportunity to play ahead of anyone else. At best, he'd be a 4th liner heading into opening night.

And the fact Lebda was the "major" piece we traded away the trade already is a steal.

I guess he didn't. Maybe if Lombari figures he needs more time... Hope that doesn't happen though.

Even if Lombardi does need more time, there isn't really a spot for Colborne - not for more than 2 games, at least (and, he'd more than likely be on the 4th line for those 2 games also). I mean, after the suspension is dealt with, if everyone's healthy, the top 2 lines are set, the 3rd line will likely be Lombardi/Frattin-Bozak/Lombardi-Armstrong, and the 4th will be Brown-Dupuis/Boyce/Bozak-Dupuis/Boyce/Orr.
