Matthews or BUST

Matthews has some catching up to do on the scoresheet if he has any intentions of outscoring Laine in this tournament.

Personally don't think theres any choice when it comes to who's going first overall. The media puts so much talk into this and watching some of these World Championships is enough to make me gag. Both are great players no doubt. Both are different type of players. What the Leafs need and have for a few years now is a true Centerman and Matthews will be there guy. There was talk about last years draft and if Auston was eligible he may have gone number 2. Laine's season was good and playoffs were excellent and he is and will be a bonafide sniper in the NHL. I wouldn't take too much in the first 2 games of the World Championships. Played 2 weak teams and I believe one of his six points have been at even strength. We'll see what he does as the tournament progresses. Matthews will be our guy book it and stop listening to these clowns on Sportsnet and TSN.

Is there a very small chance that Phoenix trades a boatload of assets to us for the 1st overall pick?

I would take their 1st rounder, Strome, Domi, Duclair, and, OLE in a heartbeat!

I highly doubt Phoenix would do this, but, who knows for sure?

If Arizona is looking to trade up I think they'd be more interested in the #4-5 pick than gutting their team for #1. Getting Tkachuk to go with Dvorak and Domi makes more sense for them.

But, would home town boy Matthews put more bums in the seats!  That's the huge factor here.

That's entering my territory of trades but even goes outside of my realm.  I was wondering 1st rounder, Strome, and OLE for Matthews and Gardiner.

The Leafs downgrade on center with Strome but upgrade on defense (a current weakness) and get a high pick (most likely Alexander Nylander) for Arizona to secure the hometown boy and receive a decent LH dman.

Whoa! Whoa! A boat's a boat, but a mystery box could be anything! It could even be a boat!

I was thinking, perhaps Arizona would be interested in trading us a boatload of assets for Austy Mathman.

I was thinking something like:

To Toronto

1st
2nd
3rd
OEL
Strome
Domi
Dvorak
Duclair
Perlini

To Arizona

Austy Mathman.

I can't believe people are even suggesting trading the pick.  How many years did we wait to get an opportunity to draft 1st overall and draft a player like this?

I can tell you this: I didn't start this thread only to have them go and turn down AM in favor of some stonerdude who speaks a language with only, like, three vowels.

It's not like they're suggesting trading the pick for Shane Doan, Alex Tanguay, and a first.

They're suggesting a huge lopsided deal full of top shelf young talent.

Who is this Austy Mathman, and, more importantly, where did we get him from?  :P

Winning puts bums in the seats. Gutting the team to get Matthews won't do the Coyotes any good.

Nice.

And I mean that with great sincerity. It's awesome. ;D

You are correct, winning does draw more fans, however, having a local superstar also draws interest from fans that wouldn't necessarily be interested in watching a team full of unknown players.  Here's a local kid making good on being a top draft pick, and, possibly being a superstar playing in his home town.  That, IMHO, will generate a lot of fan interest.
