Mitch Marner: what now?

A fun idea, just as a thought experiment, is Marner to NJD for Hall(assuming a reasonable extension can be worked out) and a good D prospect or something.

Yeah, I've seen that idea thrown around before. It's interesting. What would you consider a "reasonable" contract though? A Tavares-Panarin type deal or something with a bit more of a discount?

Good find Herman. CBC doc when Mitch was eight years old.

PM: "Myself, like a lot of hockey dad's, that we get, probably, too involved in the game. A lot of people have this vision, that their kid is gonna go somewhere, and they get really involved in it. It's like we're livin' our life through our kids."

That game: (bangs on glass and points at Mitch as he skates over) "You better get f***in' skatin' Mitch! I swear to God."
(misses net) "Are you KIDDIN' ME?!?"

"Well I do it, obviously, cuz my son loves to play more than anything, and if he decided it was soccer he'd be at a soccer field."

CJ said he thinks he might just be getting some bad advice from handlers. That's gotta be tough when you're a superstar, still young and just want to play hockey. I'm pulling for him. If his dad's got a hold on the business side (not uncommon) it'd be a really big deal to go against that in a close family.

For me it'd almost be less about AAV than term. I'm not sure I'd be thrilled to get someone with Hall's injury history at 8 years until he's 35. But a 5 year/50 million-ish deal?

Boy, were we ever na?ve back then.

Well, no deal has been signed so we'll have to see (and none of the other forwards have signed either).  Until that happens, it's all just speculation and unsubstantiated rumors.

In the meantime, I think it would be fun to throw out Marner trade proposals.  I can start with one you can shoot down:  Kotkaniemi and Petry for Marner.  Speculate away.

How is your day going JFJ?

Ouch!

Not that my proposal was any better, but there's such a huge age (and injury history) difference here I'd find that hard to stomach unless that D prospect was a really great kicker.

Haha mostly joking. But that one's a stinger hey.

Of course.  No worries!

It wouldn't be my first choice either but I think the reason it's sort of getting kicked around is that it actually sort of solves actual issues. Unlike, say, something like Marner for Laine this isn't just swapping two problems that would still exist for those teams/players just in different locales. Hall would get to go to a contender where he isn't asked to do it all himself and Marner could get the huge deal he wants with a team with a lot of cap space.

And I think that at least part of Marner's age advantage is mitigated slightly by the fact that he only wants to sign for 5 years or so anyway.

I added Petry to help Montreal work out their cap.  Montreal could use a next-level game breaker, if that's what Marner is.  Another possibility is Gallagher & Petry for Marner.  Montreal also has a good D prospect, I think.

I'm scanning through cap friendly for teams with cap space and coming to the conclusion that if you have cap space, you don't have many good players you seem likely to trade.  Not so surprising.

Anaheim ... Josh Manson, Rickard Rakell and Ryan Miller ... very underwhelming

Colorado ... Marner for Rantanen :-) ?

Ottawa ... Marner for a wet sock (it's the best asset I could identify)

I have no good ideas at the moment.

Marner wants to be top cookie.

I will resurface my proposal to Columbus, who has oodles of cap space and no one to spend it on.

To CBJ: Marner, Ceci + 50% retained (hey!)
To Tor: Jones, Anderson (another Ferris client), 2020 1st

A very fine suggestion. Though teams have a tendency to want to hold on to their own stars. Won?t they want to hold on to Jones?

They need scoring upfront more, and if the koolaid is accurate, Marner is a tap-in magician that will boost the value of their existing forwards. They have Werenski locked and he?s the homegrown player.

I like Marner a lot but I'm in love, deeply, with Seth Jones.  I'm all over this.  That trade would put the Leafs over the top.

Would this be the best D in the NHL?

I'm not so sure that Columbus would trade Jones for Marner straight up, so them adding to the deal probably wouldn't work.

I haven't been able to get a good gauge of what Columbus is feeling following the expiration and subsequent departures of Duchene, Panarin, and Bobrovsky. Picking up a Marner would expedite their 'retool' significantly.

Again with the rookie bonuses... I hope Dubas just gives them to every prospect from here on out.

It's almost like Paul needs that money for an extension on his cottage.

Mirtle on TSN: https://post.futurimedia.com/chumam/playlist/89/listen-17103.html?cb=1568203561.458977
Marner's camp turned down 7x11 back in July (apparently June) because it's not the Matthews deal.
Mirtle believes they're just pushing to the deadline to see how high the Leafs will go, but he's not sure what Marner's camp would do if the Leafs don't go there by then.

Chris Johnston on a bunch of stuff: https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/pinder-steinberg/chris-johnston-justin-faulks-future-zachas-new-deal-marners-negotiations/
Marner talk starts at 12:40
He wants a 3 year deal that is equivalent to Matthews' (4th year QO), and has been shopping that ask around the league. At the same time, CJ notes that "It's hard to carve through what they believe and what they're asking for" because this is still in the negotiation stage.
