Nick Robertson traded to Pittsburgh

Now Jason will be traded to Pittsburgh... Don't loved the return, really like Robertson, but we will just wait and see what you happen today league wild

This is a pattern I've noticed over many years on this site: when we get an arguably poor return in a trade, people start claiming the guy was never as good as everybody thought he was. I bet you if we had polled posters on here before this trade and asked them what's the least they'd expect to get for a roster player with scoring mojo like Robertson, it would have been more than a 4th.

Have the leafs been trying to move him for years? I heard many times that they told all teams he was available. Up until this moment they got nothing for him.

I don't see how I'm falling into any kind of pattern here. What people on the board think he's worth is of no matter to me. I'm specifically referring to the fact that he's asked to be traded more than once and there seemed to be no takers.

Yeah, it's really hard to manage expectations on players. Part of the reason I was upset at the trade deadline. I expected more. Trading Knies is a really difficult situation to get a read on.

I would have liked a deal of Robertson to the Stars for Mavrik Bourque, but Dallas has to want Nick Robertson enough to have that happen. It's possible that nobody wanted Nick Robertson.
 
Lower pick than we'd expect? Possibly. But he just never showed much towards his perceived potential and didn't seize the opportunities he was given (as disjointed as they were).

He moves on for a fresh start and the team clears out a spot and some cap space.

Liking the shedding of the roster.
 
He’s arbitration eligible and has lots of goals per 60, but limited off puck value. Chayka found the one front office that would still take a bet on Nick.

Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in the NHL. He can do that. Not completely useless on D. WIthout question worth more than a 4th.

Did Chayka have to make this deal today? No. Could he have gotten more later? Who knows, but no reason he couldn't have waited awhile to see if free agency changed the landscape for the better.

My initial take on Chayka is he's a bit trigger-happy.

Right or wrong a large part of this fanbase has lowered their overall opinion on Robertson long before this trade happened.

I think it might be slightly lower value than I’d like, but I’m not overly worried.

I think partly what it is is Leafs GMs pay too much for comparable players (or way too much for slightly better players) so that raises our expectations too.
