If a player was after money, why would they want to play for a Canadian team?  Make the same in the U.S. and get taxed less no?

If that $20 hot dog came with a glass of champagne, that would one thing, but the reality of the situation is that buying the $20 hot dog more than likely leads to an extended period of surviving off of KD and ramen noodles. Better to use that $20 to stock the fridge, so that the team prepare a variety of delicious meals to feast on.

There is no easy answer to that.  Each US state has their own tax rate, just like each Canadian province has.  In addition, tax rates change depending on how many days a person is actually resident in the state.  For example, I believe that the Flyers have their practice facility across the border in New Jersey since New Jersey has a lower rate than Pennsylvania.  The players can count the practice days as times they are resident in New Jersey, but must count the game days as being resident in Pennsylvania.

Of course, if you add variations in deductions, the potential for endorsements, etc., it gets even more complicated.

Is it possible that The coaching change could have an effect on things here? I'm wondering if perhaps Carlyle's system might be better for Schenn in the long run and perhaps Franson might have been better off under Wilson. Regardless of what happens with Schultz (or Schenn for that matter), I'm curious to see just where exactly Franson fits in.

I'd tend to agree with you here, Sarge, but am wondering what Franson's ceiling might be under any coach.  All things being equal, I'd rather hold on to Schenn and deal Franson, but depending on the return either one might draw I'd go either way.  At any rate, I started to doubt whether Franson can deliver on the great tools he has (6'5; big shot; etc), regardless of coach.

I think that if Justin Schultz ends up in Toronto, Franson is a definite goner. I think the best moves Burke can make this summer is somehow moving Komisarek and getting something in return for Franson, if indeed Schultz is coming here. I would think the thought would be to pair Gardner and Schultz together, seems like a no-brainer.

Gunnarsson/ Phaneuf
Liles/ Schenn
Gardner/ Schultz
Holzer

Gardiner and Phaneuf are really the only two I would say without a doubt are here in September.  Everything else could change.  If Burke gets Schultz that could be the piece to kick off the mass-overhaul. It means the end of Franson for sure.  Holzer should be a lock for a 3rd pairing job next year which puts Komisarek on the outs and Schenn in competition.

No matter what, that defense needs at least one veteran guy who can calm things down, no matter how many good young guys we have.  Assuming Komisarek isn't that guy (he isn't) then they have to replace him.  Bryan Allen is still my choice.

So Burke could have Schenn, Franson, Komi and Liles as surplus to trade if he can get Schultz and sign one veteran.  I'm going to assume Liles probably stays for now.

Gunarsson / Phaneuf
Gardiner / Veteran UFA
Liles/ Holzer

Schultz <--- I'm going to assume he starts with the Marlies, or steals a job at camp.

Liles isn't going anywhere IMO. I think you have to include him in the top 4 either way for next season, Gunnarsson would probably go as a piece before Liles, but that's just the way I see things.

I don't think they need a veteran guy really, if they need a defenseman at all, we have the pieces. The only way I see some one moving is if 1) Komisarek incredibly looks decent to another GM, 2) we get Schultz and need to move one, or 3) We get a good deal for a forward we need and end up losing 1 or 2 defensemen in trade.

If Burke is able to pick up a first line centre, it may cost him Gunnarson.  Gunnarson showed that he is capable at playing top two minutes, at a very reasonable cap it.  He should be an attractive commodity for a lot of teams, and could be a key piece in a major trade.

No, it's not... Nor do I think that changes things for Holzer. If he's good enough to play for the Leafs, he'll will regardless of what it does for the Marlies.

I like Gunnarsson, but if he gets us a first line centre, I'm sorry but "bye bye."

I'll go as far as say Gunnarsson is our most reliable defanceman, but yeah he's definitely not untouchable if we're talking about a top centre. The only problem would be that nobody else from last seasons group is a good fit to play with Phaneuf. Holzer maybe if he's promoted, but it would be quite the risk to go into next season with an unproven rookie on the top pairing and no real back-up plan available. It's kind of like the Kaberle situation, if we move him we'll just have to find somebody else to replace him and odds are that player will come with a much higher cap-hit.

I have the same reservations.  Gunnarson makes Phaneuf a better player cause he can cover for him quite effectively out there and let Dion take more chances.  They seem to have a nice chemistry between them, the Leafs would have to find someone else to play with Phaneuf if they shipped Gunnarson out.  If he's part of a package to bring back a legitimate top center then I think you have to do it, but it's a scary proposition not having him there to settle down the blueline.
