I think they have the pieces too however, I think they were wise to not pay that crazy deadline price.

How do the Rangers even have cap space? They keep signing these big free agents. It's like a bottomless well.

Based on the what Columbus was rumoured to be asking for him at the deadline, the Bruins would be looking at Marchand, Caron, Hamilton and a 1st round pick to get close to a deal.

Sadly, that's actually less than he was asking at the deadline, if there's any truth to the NYR rumours.

I think you're presupposing something that really isn't true here. I think that Howson actively doesn't want to trade Rick Nash. I think the fact that it got a lot of play at the deadline is really just because he was open to the possibility but, again, being open to that possibility is a long way from wanting to deal him or actively shopping him.
Keep in mind that Columbus isn't Toronto. Their attendance, per ESPN, was only 14,600 last year. I've heard a lot of reports of Columbus losing tons of money. One of the things that we take for granted in Toronto is that a long rebuild is possible, or even appealing, by virtue of the ever present attendance but in a place like Columbus(or in a better case scenario, New Jersey) giving their fans the hope that they'll compete is a very important part of their financial health. In Toronto they could say "We'll be good in 5 years" and worst case scenario is the season ticket wait list gets a little shorter. In a place like Columbus fans will react with "Alright, we'll buy tickets again in five years".
Nash is the team Captain as well as the face of the franchise. Trading him is a pretty clear cut sign that they're entering a rebuilding phase. The only way to make that palatable to a fanbase is to make out like a bandit. You can't sell it on draft picks or prospects.
Howson's approach with Nash makes sense, I think, in the long run if you consider the actual tangible needs of the franchise. Yeah, a lesser package might be better for the team strictly on the ice but if the team is in Quebec City then it probably doesn't matter a ton.
Bender said:Then what's with the sabre rattling? I'm sure his extreme hard line approach isn't producing more potential trading partners.
Bender said:I could imagine a few GMs getting quite annoyed and just end up refusing to deal with Howsen entirely.
Nik? said:I'd sure hope none of them work for the Leafs. That'd just be abject stupidity on their part. Their phone lines should be open to anyone who could present a deal that could help their club.
Erndog said:A lot of chatter that Evander Kane doesn't want to negotiate with Winnipeg. This could be a Kessel-Boston type situation where the player just wants out for whatever reason.
I would give up A LOT for Evander Kane. A 20 year old, 30 goal scorer, big/strong power forward, who has all the tools to be one of those PPG type of players you lean on for years.
If we drafted a guy like this at #5 I'm pretty sure we would be ecstatic. I'm sure the Jets would ask for a lot. Worth it?
SGT said:If I wanted Kane & #9 and offered #5 + X, what would X need to be?
bustaheims said:SGT said:If I wanted Kane & #9 and offered #5 + X, what would X need to be?
Substantial. Moving from 9th to 5th is probably the equivalent of a pair of 2nd round picks. So, for that X, you're probably looking at a 2 of Gardiner, Kadri, Colborne, Kulemin, Ashton and some other smaller pieces on either side to fill things out.

Doubtful.
