Leafs GM Nonis on The Fan 590, made a reference to some interest in forward Tim Connolly (currently with the Marlies), from various teams...

And those teams didn't pick him up when he was on waivers because.....?

Could be a result of injuries hitting a team.

Or the hope that Toronto will eat some of his salary.

and at the deadline there isn't much salary left to pay anyway.

or they've see him getting his game back at the AHL level.  The suggestion by Nonis was he was hurt by the lockout and basically wasn't at the level he needed to be to play on this team. he could be there now.

Depth centres at the deadline are often a hot commodity. one reason why I almost hope the Leafs hang on to him for a little bit here.  If they do happen to make the playoffs, Connolly has a fair bit of post season experience.

Add to that the extra D we have, could mean we get a nice pick or prospect back. Its nice to be able to deal from a position of strength.

I don't see any reason to get rid of Connolly. He can come up if an injury strikes a center, he is in the last year of his contract and there are no cap issues right now for the Leafs.

Agreed RedLeaf. If he is traded for an asset i'm for it. I was referring to the opinions that say get rid of Connolly at all costs, even if you have to pay some of his contract.

I'd much rather a draft pick, than Connolly also. I hated the second year of his contract the day it was signed.

I think Nonis is just waiting for the right moment to deal him, his stock is climbing fast so I think it will be soon. if it becomes a multi player deal then we could see a high return.

Why is his stock rising? I don't see it really.

Gotta agree there...if there was a market for him he would have been taken for free of waivers at the beginning of the season....I don't he has done all the much to warrant his stock rising.  Perhaps as an addition to a larger deal though...

There have been some rumblings that interest in him has picked up a little bit, but, that's about it. I wouldn't say anything has happened that has dramatically increased his value.

He's apparently played respectably in the AHL to help hold some value for himself.

As injuries to top 6 centers occur around the league, he becomes a consideration to fill in. I don't think we'll get blown away by a return for him but they're likely to get a lower round pick rather than losing him to waivers for nothing.  In that way, his stock has risen but obviously, it's not a mind blowing change - just moving from getting nothing to maybe getting something.

As well, as we get closer to the deadline, the cost impact of his salary on a team's budget drops. If it weren't for his contract, he probably wouldn't have cleared waivers  - someone might have taken a chance on him. In that way, as time goes on, his potential return in a trade bumps up a little.

His game has picked up and there are lots of injurys out there.  One thing the leafs have learned from being a low end team for so long, is that when you are the team looking for help, you will pay the price to get it.  so as the team with the help we get to reap the rewards, and we will.

Yeah, I thought he was talking like Connolly was blowing the lights out or something. I agree with cw, that maybe we get 6-7 rounder for him, but I would think that a team would have to exhaust it's other targets, before they start talking about Mr. Connolly.

I was thinking that if he was to be traded anytime before the deadline, we'd have to eat a bit of salary to rid ourselves of him.

More of the nutman prophecies. A turd is still a turd, no matter how much you shine it up, that's the way I see this.

I guess 7 points in 13 AHL games has teams chomping at the bit.

I think it'll be more than that. Unlike around here, my guess is NHL GMs see some value in him. I'm not saying the return will be great, but, it'll probably be more like a 3rd rounder rather than a 6th rounder.

are we talking about the same Tim Connolly? I think anything better than a 5th round pick would be a gift.. Didn't he already pass through waivers and none one wanted for free?
