Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Based on his career so far, that should provide Ottawa with 2 years where it's a good contract and 2 years where he's massively overpaid. And those years will alternate.

I'm surprised Melnyk signed off on this. There must be some provision for recouping a certain percentage of Murray's salary to pay for Melnyk's Hull casino debts.

Super weird and inflated deal.  Ottawa held the hammer and could have signed him to a deal which allowed him to prove his worth.

Want to get to the cap floor?  Take on other team's bad contracts and get an asset out of it.

Of all the time Melnyk opens the purse strings up, it's now.  :-X

Seems like they are following the Leafs blueprint.  Stock pile some young players, trade for an experienced goalie, aquire some players to protect the young players.

Extremely Ottawa and it?s not even their doing

Melnyk filed a defamation lawsuit against the Sun columnist for the article about the Sens foundation that claimed he was diverting funds.

Even though I knew it wasn't him, part of me had hoped it was against Simmons.

I appreciate that these guys want to be planning ahead but given what the province is realistically looking at over the next few months, the idea of seriously caring about NHL attendance seems like a misstep.

I don't know that I can fault him for the misstep but I agree with you.

Considering their attendance isn't much more than 6000 a night, I'm not sure they need to do much planning other than spreading people out a little more

This is actually... good?

Bit of an overpay based on his age but ppg translating to about 70 pt seasons for the last 3 yrs isn't bad. Ultimately you're going to have to be the highest bidder if you want to get a player to ottawa I'd guess.

20-25 goals, 60-70 points, good value in UFA for that production.

Back loaded (3.5M in year 1) so they'll trade him after 1 or 2 seasons though.

COVID had really bad timing for the Leafs.

There are some nice deals out there.

Don't like it. Too decent a deal for Ottawa.

If it makes you feel any better, if the sens don't bring back Duclair (or sign another top-6 forward) this move only makes them a little bit better.

Also while I said this is a good contract for a guy who's averaged about 70 points, let's see what he does when he swaps Huberdeau and Barkov with like Colin White and Connor Brown.

That's a fair point. He'll almost certainly feel a definite drop off in established talent.

Speaking of the super underrated Connor Brown, who is awesome, do we know if he elected arbitration or if it was the team?

Imagine saying this about any other penalty. He'll trip you when you least expect it. He's great at boarding guys. Opponents need to watch their wrists when he's around cause he'll slash them.

I mean, quite literally this is tantamount to saying "he's not a good defenseman" but the unfortunate thing is that in the modern day NHL it's effectively saying he can be an helpful defenseman in the playoffs.
