Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Andersen for Ottawa's 3rd 1st rder (NYI pick)?
Or, if Dorion is drunk, Brannstrom.

I was thinking about that too.  He'd only cost them $1m on a cap hit of $5m.

That's got to be super interesting to Melnyk, especially since they're really not going for anything this season.

Having said that, that's a tough thing to do to Andersen.

Stay close to his friends and rejoin some other old friends?
I agree, a west coast move would be better for everyone; one of the Alberta teams rather than Ottawa/Buffalo (who are asking about Reimer and Fleury)... maybe even Carolina

I really doubt the sens think that they're in a position to take that step, no matter how appealing Andersen's low salary is.

I wasn't referring to the 1st round pick herman wanted to see for Andersen.  I was just suggesting that Andersen would likely be very interesting to the sens.

Even if it wasn't a 1st they'd have to pay something of high value to acquire him, the Leafs aren't giving him away for free, and that just doesn't seem like a good use of assets for them. It both depletes their futures and if Andersen goes on one of his tears next season it could hurt their draft pick position which is really all they should care about right now.

Connor Brown.

The sens are buying out Bobby Ryan. On the one hand this must be tough for Ryan after working so hard to get back into the game and winning the Masterton Trophy. On the other hand though it gives him a chance to potentially play on a more competitive team. I don't know where his game is at right now but there sure will be a lot of people rooting for him.

This also means the sens are likely losing 3 guys their fanbase have really rallied around the past few years in Borowiecki, Anderson, and of course Ryan.

"wanting to open up a roster spot for younger players" lol come on just admit that they're broke.

I really don't understand Ottawa, they'll never be a cap team but why have a $1.8M cap hit in years 3 and 4 when Ryan's contract was going to expire anyway after 2 years?  I guess Melnyk is so cheap he needs to save a few bucks.

If you're not going to worry about being anywhere near the cap, why wouldn't you cut a guy to save millions of dollars if he doesn't really fit into your long or short term plans? Especially if you're also left with the problem of the highest paid player on your team being a marginal 3rd liner.

Melnyk's money troubles or not, this seems like kind of a no-brainer for a rebuilding team.

I can't be critical of the sens on this decision.  He's not tradeable, so this makes sense.

I could see them keeping him if his AAV was a lot higher than his paycheck, but he's owed $7.5m per year for the next 2 years.

Good move.

They'll still be paying him over $11mil (albeit over 4 years now) to not play for them.

But the upside of keeping him is what? That he maybe provides good value vs. the millions of saved dollars on a team that likely won't be competitive?

I guess it depends on how Ottawa plans on reaching the cap floor. They might not actually be "saving" any money really since they still need to spend to the cap floor minus whatever LTIR contracts they can pick up (and those seem to be dwindling so I'm not sure how many they can acquire).

Maybe they want Freddie, $1M actual money but $5M cap hit.  Floor in sight!
