2011/2012 Injury Thread

I thought the team can be over the cap in the off season as long as its under the cap when pre-season starts.

Teams get a 10% cushion in the summer until opening night, but, most of (if not all, depending on where the cap is at after the new CBA) will be taken up by Pronger, if this scenario plays out.

Sounds like Giroux is going to return to the line-up tonight after missing 4 games due to a concussion. I don't know why they wouldn't sit him for 1 more game and give him an extra 5 days to rest over the Christmas break, but I guess there's absolutely no reason to doubt the Flyers medical staff.

They let a guy play with a collapsed lung.

That is extremely stupid, especially considering they're 2nd in the conference and there's absolutely no rush to get him back.  It all may be fine and nothing happens, but why take that chance, when as you say he could get extra days at the Christmas break and come back even better?

Liles and Weber now out indefinitely with concussions. So frustrating.

Trotz isn't ruling out Friday as a possible return date for Weber, so it could be like one of those minor Giroux-like concussions. Then again, who the heck knows with concussions. We can only hope the same for Liles.

I can't believe the number of concussions this year already. Are the numbers up that much or are the teams being extra cautious now?

I think the teams are being extra cautious but the number are certainly up and I think there are 2 reasons - speed/rule changes and the equipment they wear...but don't worry the NHL is "studying" the equipment for the last 5 years so you know...any day now..maybe...

A lot of these guys are coming back within a week or two of being hit, so, I'd say it's a combination of being extra cautious and a better understanding of what is/might be a concussion.

The players are examined by doctors alot more frequently and during the game after big hits/contact etc. That was one of the results from the "what to do about head shots" conference they had.

I think the number of concussions are relatively the same as theyve been for a while, the difference being you have a doctor telling guys they cant play where as a few seasons ago, guys like Pronger and Armstrong would have just continued playing anyway, and probobly have been doing so for years.

Penguins' Staal, Neal to miss significant time with injuries: Go to TSN.ca for details. #TSN bit.ly/zxTlco

I've heard  4-6 weeks for Staal (knee) and "weeks" for Neal (broken foot.) So, no Crosby, Letang, Staal, or Neal for huge chunks of the rest of the season (and maybe one or two for the entire duration.) Not much left there... Ouch.

They've lost 4 in a row - 6 of 10 since Crosby went out, dropped to 8th in the conference . . . if they lose Malkin (who has been injury prone and already hurt once this season), they're done - and, I mean like top 10 pick type done.

Even with Staal out for 4-6 weeks, I'd still be inclined to ask Pittsburgh about him. Perhaps they'd be looking for immediate help in exchange. That is if they're still hoping to make the dance.
