Official 2012-2013 CHL Prospects Thread

Just got home from the Kitchener-Guelph game. Garrett Sparks, coming off a selection to Team USA for the WJHC and with Leafs brass at the Aud, made 33 saves on 35 shots. This was his 29th appearance in 30 games for the Storm. The Storm won 3-2 in a SO and Sparks was 2nd star. Didn't really notice Matt Finn that much.

It was also Teddy Bear Toss night at the Aud. 8870 bears went flying after Brent Pedersen's opening goal.

Notes:
-Rielly is starting to pick up his scoring against, and is still 3rd in scoring among blueliners in the WHL.
-Finn missed a couple of weeks with mono. He likely played a little with it before missing time and is probably still not 100%, but he has been in the line-up for Guelph's last 3 games.
-Leivo suffered a concussion on Nov. 24, there is currently no timetable for his return. It doesn't sound like it was a bad one, but obviously it's difficult to say.
-Rupert is back in action after missing almost a month with a shoulder injury.
-As mentioned elsewhere, Rielly was invited to Team Canada's WJC camp, while Biggs and Sparks were invited to the United States camp.

Rielly was -2 tonight in a 2-1 loss to Red Deer.  He was kept in check pretty well tonight.  The whole team looked quite lackluster after just coming back from a long two week road trip.  Dumba hit him hard a few times; probably figured he had a better chance of making the Junior squad if he could take Rielly out (although I don't see how he couldn't make it, though stranger things have happened).

Time for our regularly scheduled prospects update. The CHL regular season ends March 17th, so I'll have another update shortly after that to gear up for the playoffs.

Notes:
Brown suffered a concussion on February 18th and has been out since. With Erie out of the playoffs his season is likely over.
Finn missed another month and a half with mono, but has played in Guelph's past 2 games.
Rielly is currently 5th among defencemen in WHL scoring. 3 of the 4 players ahead of him have 10+ more games played because of the WJC.
Leivo and Brown are currently 19th and 20th respectively in OHL scoring. Brown will obviously soon slip out because of his injury.
Sparks ranked 2nd in wins, 6th in GAA, 5th in SA%, and 1st in shutouts among OHL goalies.

Here is what the playoff situations are for the prospects:

Finn
Biggs
Leivo
Broll

Not very good news coming out of Guelph tonight. Matt Finn was on the wrong end of a knee on knee hit during the Storm's game against Saginaw. Twittwr reports say he left the ice unable to put any weight on his left leg.

Rough season for him. He missed a lot of time with mono earlier in the year.

The regular season wrapped up on Sunday, so here's the final update before the playoffs began.

Notes:
-As Deebo mentioned, Rielly was named the WHL Eastern Conference defenceman of the year. He finished 5th in the WHL in points among defencemen, and played less games than the 4 players ahead of him.
-Sparks finished tied for 1st in wins, tied for first in shutouts, 7th in GAA, and 5th in SA%.
-Percy finished 11th in the OHL in points among defencemen.
-Leivo finished 19th in the OHL in points.
-Leivo and Brown led their teams in scoring.

Rielly and Brown are the only Leafs prospects that will not be participating in the CHL playoffs. It's already been confirmed that Rielly will join the Marlies for the remainder of the AHL season. He will wear #44. Brown suffered a concussion in the middle of February, and while he returned late in the season for a few games and even scored 2 goals in Erie's final regular season game, it sounds like he won't be joining the Marlies.

Ryan Rupert's London Knights secured 1st overall in the OHL this season, finishing with 9 more points than the next highest team. They will play the Saginaw Spirit in the first round.

Stuart Percy and the Mississauga Stealheads made the playoffs by just 1 point, despite a last-10 record of 1-6-0-3. They'll face off against the top seed in the Eastern conference, the Belleville Bulls. Unless they turn things around soon, Percy could be joining an already very crowded Marlies blueline very soon.

Kitchener vs. Guelph is the 4-5 matchup in the West. Kitchener traded for Josh Leivo midseason so he'll face off against one of the OHLs top goalies in Garret Sparks. Unfortunately Finn will miss this series and likely even longer with a MCL injury.

The Oshawa Generals finished 3rd in the East, and Biggs finished 3rd in team scoring. They'll face the Niagara IceDogs in the first round.

David Broll and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds will attempt to upset the 3rd seeded Owen Sound Attack in round one.

Have to say I haven't been very impressed with Broll in the playoffs.  Has shown next to no offensive instincts, and other than a fight I've hardly noticed him doing anything of note.  He's not playing with Nick Cousins anymore, which helps explain the lack of offensive production.

Rielly has played 6 games for the Marlies so far; the first one at home was yesterday.

Good read Rob, I see Reilly going back to Junior next year as well.  We have enough young D in the system and with the big club that there is no need to rush his progress.  Unless he really steps it up at camp I expect guys like Blacker and Percy to play a big role with the Marlies next season.  Maybe a guy like Granberg comes over after signing an ELC last year. I even see Finn making the step up to the Marlies before Reilly simply because of the lost time Reilly had due to injury in his draft year.  Reilly should have a strong year in Junior and a good WJC and then lead the Marlies the following year.

Marlies have signed goaltender Garret Sparks to an ATO.  Not quite sure why he neeed to after signing a 3-year deal only about a week ago, but probably some technicality to get around CHL/AHL cooperation rules.

Sparks has really climbed the depth chart in a big hurry, from a 7th round pick in 2011 to the Marlies. Not too shabby.
