Official Ottawa Senators Thread

https://ottawasun.com/opinion/columnists/gibbons-melnyks-tussle-with-sens-foundation-could-be-a-messy-one

The foundation hasn?t entirely ignored Melnyk?s appeal to flow at least some cash into organ donation awareness. In 2018, against its better judgment, perhaps, it donated $100,000, plus an additional $15,000 in sponsorships, to The Organ Project (TOP), a Toronto-based private charitable foundation set up by Melnyk in 2016 to manage his pet project ? creating greater awareness about organ donations and waiting lists.

According to Canada Revenue Agency filings, the Organ Donation Project generated  $991,708 in revenues in 2018, primarily thanks to a big charity gala it staged in Toronto. No doubt, that $100,000 Senators Foundation cheque helped.

So what happened to all that money? Again, according to CRA filings, The Organ Project invested barely $5,000 of the nearly $1 million it raised on organ donor awareness. For those without a calculator, that?s 0.49 per cent, or less than half a cent for every dollar raised.

So many charities are effectively just excuses for wealthy people to throw themselves parties in the name of raising "awareness" it's really breathtaking. Before giving anyone your money you really should do your research on them.

My god, I started reading a little bit more about The Organ Project and the publicly given reason that Melnyk used for "temporarily" shutting it down last fall is absolutely mental:

According to Melnyk, The Organ Project helped boost organ donor registration. But he said Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN), the provincial government agency that delivers and coordinates organ and tissue donation in Ontario, has been less than forthcoming with any information that would give credit to his charity.

"Despite enormous efforts to attempt to get confirmations from Trillium that we deserved credit for the spike in organ donation registration, we were disallowed that information," Melnyk wrote in an email to CBC News.

"We felt that there was therefore no other choice other than to suspend efforts for mass registration."

HE CLOSED DOWN HIS CHARITY BECAUSE HE DIDN'T THINK HE WAS BEING GIVEN ENOUGH PRAISE

(Trillium Gift of Life Network denies Melnyk's claim later in the article too)

A big chunk of the accounts he follows on twitter are prominent MAGA people.

This fan asked Sens Twitter to donate to the Trillium Gift of Life organ donation charity and $16,254.05 was raised in under 24 hours.

It cost Eugene Melnyk's organ donation awareness charity nearly a million dollars to invest $5,000 into this cause.

I really don't understand how the NHL doesn't have a professional conduct clause for ownership that hasn't been tripped a dozen times over with Melnyk.  If there was even an incompetent owner in town they would have a new arena deal in place already to move closer to the city.  I want to go back to hating on the Sens for being stupid, not awful humans.

Looks like those articles had some "inaccuracies" in them. With that said I'm not sure that gets Melnyk's charity completely off the hook and the divorce between the sens and their charity still seems messy.

Basically this just makes it seem like both Melnyk and Sun Media are jokes, which yeah, checks out.

I'm perfectly willing to believe that the Sun could mess up reporting but the whole "We didn't spend that money on actual programs, we spent it on 'raising awareness' and hosting galas" isn't the defense they think it is. "Raising awareness" is what every terrible charity says is an acceptable use of non-program dollars.

Also, the bit re: rent, it feels like the Sun shouldn't just be quoting the Sens as to what they're required to do legally but, you know, look at the relevant laws and report if that's true or not.

This seemed pretty expected. Really wonder what his career would have looked like if he didn't spend all of it on such mediocre teams.

Hard to say. He was on some decent teams as well and had good years then. He's always been an on or off kind of guy.
