Perhaps his cardinal sin was not being a "yes-man". With that owner at the helm, I'm not sure one even WANTS to be in line with the "core-values" of the Ottawa Senators.

This is perfectly written parody (other than spelling) because it has exactly the right amount of incredulity and believability. Fakes can be beautiful.

Yeah, but these are how the urban legends about the problems of teams get started.  I heard from a friend who heard from a friend that Melnyk lost his temper with his body guard because he wouldn't go out and get him cigarettes at 3 AM in the morning when he was drunk one time in Bermuda.

Or the whole Player X was sleeping with Player Y's wife and that is why they were traded.

Someone will take this as truth and then run with it.

Ha! Ha!  Melnyk sure comes across as el cheapo.

It reminds me of the story I heard while staying in Spain one particular year, of the legend of Salvador Dali who would call up the hotel front desk, and drive poor Francisco crazy in demanding flowers be delivered at his home in craggy Cadaques ? at 4 AM in the morning!

Who the heck is going to deliver at that hour of night as most taxis did not rejoice taking the commute around the rocky cliffs of that town neither day nor night.  Finally the concierge managed to get one of the guys who worked there to do the errand.  After all said he, Dali was a great tipper.  No matter when the day, night, or hour.

Legends are made, tales are born, and some literally run to it!

Friedman says that at some point during Little and Melynk's very lively conversation that got him fired Little brought up the fact that the fans have zero confidence in Melnyk as a team owner (something that is apparently backed up by a report that the team did).

In a way, what's really funny about this isn't that Little got fired because of a heated conversation, it's funny that he got fired three weeks after it. Firing someone in a fit of rage because they offended you is nutty but we all know that type. Firing someone because they offended you three weeks ago and you weren't able to work past it...that's some special idiocy right there.

For Leaf fans who grew up in the 90s or later, Eugene Melnyk's ownership of the Senators is very roughly analagous to Harold Ballard's ownership of the Leafs in the 70s and 80s.  Two different owners who caused problems with their teams in different ways, but generally in common was the cheapness, the mismanagement of the team, the craziness, and the sense of futility and despair they brought their fanbases.

On one hand, I can laugh at the Ottawa gong show, but on the other hand I can really sympathize with the fanbase, because I've been through that nightmare before, too.

Yeah. Melnyk's less of a cartoonish super villain type, but there are definitely parallels.

Also, I think the major difference is Ballard being cheap with what should have been the most profitable team in the league and Melnyk running what would be, under any ownership, one of the smaller clubs. Not that I think Melnyk isn't a jerk but I do think it's fairly likely that his being "cheap" is not wanting to subsidize losses which I'm sure is frustrating for Sens fans but I don't think is particularly unique to whoever may own the team in the future.

Those Ballard days!  Nightmarish enough for us Leafs fans.  Sens fans now know what we went through, only worse.

In which everyone on Twitter dunks on the Sens.

I mean I guess it's good it wasn't because of the original speculated reasons... but damn Melynk skimming "hundreds of thousands of dollars annually" from the charity by charging rent is pretty messed up.

I remember the Sens Foundation took a fair bit of heat a couple of years ago because of this report:

Well now we can understand where at least some of that lost money was going. Wonder if Calgary's owners are charging the Flames Foundation a high rent too...

Throw him in jail. This kind of behaviour should not be tolerated.

Or make him POTUS. One or the other.
