Official Tank Nation Topic

Ahh didn't read that 2nd tie-breaker close enough, thanks for clarifying.

Yeah, the explanation is kind of complicated, but, what comes down to is, at the end of the season, the Leafs record against individual non-Canadian Western Conference teams doesn't figure in as a tie-breaker. For the most part, at the end of the season, the 2nd tie-breaker only figures in to conference standings and not league standings (with the obvious exceptions of teams being in the same conference).

I don't think the Habs will catch us - nor Edm I guess as well.

Makes that last game of the season meaningless for Tank Nation.  :-[

Not really.  If all the teams around the Leafs lose out and the Leafs win against Montreal they could drop from a potential #4 draft selection to #8.

Edmonton's loss last night makes the worst the Leafs can finish is 3rd last. Winning five or six of their maximum six remaining points could place the Leafs as high as 10th worst.

The games tonight will narrow the range of where the Leafs can finish. For example, if the Leafs win, that would mean Montreal also cannot pass them - worst finish for Leafs would be 4th last. If the Leafs fail to get a point, that would mean the Leafs can't pass Tampa or Winnipeg - best possible finish would be 8th last.

Whasington lost last night to Tampa, I bet that Buffalo will be fired again to gain ground as they still on the race.

Winnipeg's win puts them too far ahead for the Leafs to catch. Highest possible finish for Leafs drops to 22nd (9th worst).
http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm?type=lea#&navid=nav-stn-league
The Leafs are currently 26th (5th worst)

Tampa & Carolina own the tie breaker with the Leafs. A point gained by Tampa in their three remaining games or a point missed by the Leafs in their remaining two games would clinch Tampa finishing ahead of the Leafs. Tampa plays Montreal tonight and the Leafs tomorrow.

If Carolina wins two of four possible points in their two remaining games or the Leafs miss two points in their two remaining games or Carolina gets one point and the Leafs miss one point, Carolina would clinch finishing ahead of the Leafs. Carolina plays Montreal tomorrow.

The Leafs have the tie breaker over Minnesota. Both teams have two games to play while Minnesota has one more point in the standings. The Leafs must get more points than Minnesota does over their last two games to overtake them.

Anaheim and the Leafs are tied in points with two games remaining each. Anaheim currently leads the tie breaker with -25 goal differential vs the Leafs -31.  The Leafs must get more points than Anaheim does over their last two games to overtake them or overtake them in goal differential over the last two games while matching them in points.

The Leafs have clinched the tie breaker with the Islanders. The Isles must win two more points than the Leafs over their final two games to pass the Leafs.

The Leafs have clinched the tie breaker over the Habs. If the Habs fail to win all three of their games or the Leafs win a point in their final two games, the Habs will lock up a position below the Leafs in the standings.

In the Habs-Lightning game tonight, if the Habs do not win in regulation or lose, the Leafs final position will tighten to between 4th and 8th worst. If the Habs win in regulation, nothing changes in clinching the standings with the Leafs.

With many teams playing tomorrow, a lot of this will be settled then:
Tampa v Toronto
Winnipeg v Islanders
Montreal v Carolina
Chicago v Minnesota
Anaheim v Edmonton

The most likely position where the Leafs will finish is around where they are - 5th or 6th worst.

The choice was this or talking about blowing a three goal lead to the Sabres ...  :(

What an ugly season

I wouldn't  go that far, the season was going very good, and at least I know I was enjoying it untill the wheels fell off. I still think there is a good team growing in this mess.

i would say with out a doubt that this team is better than any thing i have seen since 93, maybe it will even prove to be much better than that crew. i believe this team barring no crazy injury attack, will make the playoffs. most that say they will be in say it wil be a fight for 8th, i am aiming for the 6th.

I had a generous range for them to finish between 7th and 12 in the conference depending on the goaltending. They're currently 13th with subpar goaltending.

At this juncture, it's also tough to blame it all on Ron Wilson.

I do agree that their young guys are better than they've shown. Most like Gardiner as a new addition. I think Frattin will also do well.

Let's just call it an ugly disappointment then.

Out of curiosity, how does Anaheim currently have a tiebreaker over Toronto?

The Leafs won the head-to-head matchup, and they both have 30 Regulation-Overtime wins (and Toronto has 36 total wins to Anaheim's 35).  Is it because Anaheim has fewer regulation losses? (35 to the Leafs' 36)

Head to head only gets considered by the tie breaker if they play in each other's building (they consider an equal number of home games for each). Toronto only played Anaheim once this year.

When they can't do head to head or they tie there, they drop down to goal differential.

Your unbriddled enthusiasm never ceases to amaze me.

But I'm glad you can find comfort in any situation.  I wish I was half as optimistic as you always seem to be.

Optimistic? Yes, but they were in a playoff position for four months of a six (and a bit) month season.  Those first four months weren't an accident.

He is kind of right. Even with the problems the team was having, things were mostly fun from October until February.

All the excitiment of a playoff year with a high pick to boot!

Must be what the Bruins felt like the year they drafted Seguin.

I believe my guess for where they would finish, was not too out there, like you said disappointment is what we got.

It makes life so much better looking for the positive in things.

It will be nice when we don't have to look for the positives in a failed season and could just know it was one based on the standings.
