Out of curiosity, how does Anaheim currently have a tiebreaker over Toronto?

The Leafs won the head-to-head matchup, and they both have 30 Regulation-Overtime wins (and Toronto has 36 total wins to Anaheim's 35).  Is it because Anaheim has fewer regulation losses? (35 to the Leafs' 36)

Head to head only gets considered by the tie breaker if they play in each other's building (they consider an equal number of home games for each). Toronto only played Anaheim once this year.

When they can't do head to head or they tie there, they drop down to goal differential.

I messaged with James Mirtle and he says that Toronto currently sits with the 5th pick and that Anaheim is 6th. He bases this on shootout wins not counting and the Ducks having more wins.....?

Okay. I get it now.

Tie-Breaking procedure
* - Division leaders are seeded 1, 2, and 3 in Conference standings. If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

1.The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2.The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
3.The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
4.The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. NOTE: In standings a victory in a shootout counts as one goal for, while a shootout loss counts as one goal against.

Toronto has had one more win than the Ducks in the shootout so that does not count. # 3 is a moot point so # 4 applies and the Ducks have a 6 goal differential in GF vs. GA better than the Leafs.

But the safest way to handle this is to just LOSE the next two games!

The ROW column in the standings

means "Regulation Or Overtime" (not shootout wins) per the recent rules change

Thanks cw.  This is the way my mind works as well.  Keeps me awake sometimes.  :)

The choice was this or talking about blowing a three goal lead to the Sabres ...  :(

What an ugly season

I wouldn't  go that far, the season was going very good, and at least I know I was enjoying it untill the wheels fell off. I still think there is a good team growing in this mess.

Your unbriddled enthusiasm never ceases to amaze me.

But I'm glad you can find comfort in any situation.  I wish I was half as optimistic as you always seem to be.

Optimistic? Yes, but they were in a playoff position for four months of a six (and a bit) month season.  Those first four months weren't an accident.

Well the first what 3 weeks was an accident, remember the hot start.  After that we basically played .500 hockey and that start kept us afloat until the debacle of  the last two months.  The team hasn't been good for really the last 70 games.

Starting goaltender gets hit in the head and doesn't recover, proceeds to have a classic sophomore slump.

It sucks, but I was surprised the team actually competed half decently with Reimer out.

I realize they won some games before he got hurt but even in preseason, Reimer did not look sharp to me - not the guy who finished the season before. The concussion certainly didn't help matters and may have delayed him from regaining his form but it was a form he lacked before he got hurt in my opinion.

Habs won in regulation so there's no change in the standings with respect to the Leafs final draft position.

I agree and said so at the time.  Still, the concussion never sorted itself out IMO so Bender's point has a lot of merit.

Man the NHL is so messed up. So, shootout points count, shootout wins don't, but shootout goals do. Got it. Makes perfect sense. I love the shootout.

Tonight is a big night. Every team that affects Tank Nation is in play. After tonight they will all have just one more game.

- Leafs need to lose last home game to TB
- Isles need to beat the Jets in Long Island
- Ducks need to beat the Oilers in Edmonton
- Wild need to beat the Blackhawks in Minny
- Canes are home and need to beat the Habs

If we lose, and the Habs win, then on Saturday they could overtake us

Please. Just let us long suffering Leaf fans have these 2 things.

Both losses.

Let us have #3 overall.

Let us have something from this heartbreaking (again) season.

No other way around on the last one.  If the Habs beat the Canes, they could overtake the Leafs.  If the Leafs lose, then they can't gain any ground on the Canes.

True enough. However, if the Leafs manage to screw this up and win tonight we would be in danger of catching the Canes and that is what I was noticing.

Really...it's just sad that it's come to this.

I think WIGWAL said Faska could go 8/9/10.  He could go a little higher, who knows... but either way, I think guys like him show that there are going to be some nice players available in the 5-10 range too.

Last I heard Radek Faksa was out about a week ago with a head injury (not sure what?).  I googled him quickly and couldn't find any recent updates.

Any idea?
