Official Tank Nation Topic

For those who think we didn't tank bad enough.

They leafs had the worst record among the bottom 8 teams over the last 10 games of the season.

And they won 6 of the last 28.

7-18-4 over their final 29 games. You can't tank much better than that.

Leafs finish with the 5th slot. Could have been better, but hey, if they had won tonight, like so many cheering fans seemed to want, they would have finished 7th.

Glad for the loss.  Hopeful for a solid draft choice. Expecting Burke to get to work this off-season, but before he can he will have to acknowledge some of his mistakes and then fix them.

Burke must know if the dismal results continue into next season, he will be canned by Christmas. He isn't the type of guy to meekly fade away, he'll try very hard to improve the squad but his options are simply thin.

I do worry about that. A bunch of bad GM decisions historically have been made at the deadline. I think a primary cause is the pressure to win. Fewer errors get made during the off season but I think a bunch of them go bad when the GM is under pressure.

I think Burke is pretty strong mentally. But with the things he said being thrown back in his face in the giant media firestorm that is Toronto, he's human. I hope he's plays it cool.

The most obvious is to address the position of most impact:

The Leafs are 2nd last in team save%.

there are no absolute ringers on the goalie UFA market but there are a few guys who might be able to help.

As long as he doesn't trade away a bunch of quality youth to grab an aged goalie or a guy a year or two away from UFA status, I'll be roughly ok with a trade. UFAs come with no talent cost and that's the path I'd most seriously pursue first - even if the guy they get isn't quite as good.

But who out of that group would you go for? I mean other then Brodeur (assumed unavailable retires/sticks with jersey)?

If we end up going the free agency route for a goalie and not trade, I get the feeling we end up signing Harding.

Was going to say, he intrigues me the most out of anyone on that list.  Maaaybe Montoya.

Thats quite a scary injury list...granted he does seem to be the 'best of whats left' ...but a number of hip injuries, knee injury(s) requiring surgery and a year off at least two head injuries. Id just hate to watch our season go down to injury in the first 10 games (for possibly the second season in a row)

Maybe offer sheet RFAs.  Price, Schneider, Rask, Pavelec, Lindback eligible.  Not Burke's previous MO, but perhaps a change in approach is warranted.

Although unlikely because he wants to win a Cup, I'd kick Vokoun's tires if he's healthy. I'd also check out Biron.

I think the reason RFA signings have been virtually non-existent under this CBA is because young assets, especially a good young goaltender, are so valuable that the only way to have a contract not be matched is to offer more than that player's worth, both in terms of dollars and in terms of draft pick compensation.

Try coming up with a number for Price that Montreal wouldn't match in a heartbeat. Then think about the compensation required and the realities of the cap hit. That's why it's not done.

It hasn't really been anyone's MO, 1 player has moved through restricted free agency since 1997.

2, if you include Gratton who Tampa let go in 1997. There's really only been ten signed offer sheets from 1997 as well. It's just not a tool GMs like to use for all the reasons Nik just outlined - the asset costs and cap implications needed to actually get a team to walk away from the player generally exceeds the player's actual worth.

I'm with you on that.  Harding or Montoya.

Why would the Leafs even consider Montoya?  The goalies we now have have shown more potential than Montoya.

I wonder what we could give to Edmonton to entice them to swap picks with us.  They need defense, not forwards.

I was thinking about this - wonder if Edmonton would do a Schenn + 5th overall for Paajarvi + 3rd overall type deal?  Leafs would probably need to add, but ideally not too much.

Both guys have struggled for a couple seasons, and both speak (somewhat) to organizational need for the receiving team.
