This reminds me of the playoffs when the Leafs need a goal and are unable to do anything.

Right in the mark.  They are in the doldrums, again.

Just a dull dull dull game.  Deserved to lose.

They haven't dominated a game offensively all year.  The top line is not working, Sheldon.

This game sucks.

Could have left after the opening ceremony, which was the highlight.

The first two periods I thought they played well and it was a good game. Then Kallgren let in that stinker, the Pens played the trap and the Leafs are just unable to create any offense when a team goes into their shell.

It's pathetic that we are trying so hard to find a linemate for Marner and Matthews. They are what? In the top 5 for highest paid in the league? You should be able to stick any plug with them and they should light it up. Clearly Dubas' model does not work in hockey. This isn't the NBA. You can't tie up so much capspace in players that are too easily neutralised.

Marner needs to go. He's the odd one out and he doesn't provide enough for his hit.

He's not going anywhere.  And shouldn't.  "Let's dump the guy who scored 97 last year" is not a take with any prospects for longevity.

Give credit to Pitt. They didn't give up much. Close game and a soft goal loses it for the Leafs..let's see if Murray is a go for tomorrow or we see Petruzzelli.

I really hate this team sometimes. Could they not have won it for Salming tonight? Sittler was a mess, I was a mess. Bunch of losers

So you think they build of this team is fine? They have to make some kind of big change.

And this isn't about them losing. It's about how they lose. Like I said earlier that 3rd period was an exact copy of them in the playoffs. They need a goal. They need some sustained pressure. The 4th line did a hell of a lot more than Matthews/Marner.

What a moment with Borje at the start of the game.  Reportedly Borje was smiling for the first time in a while,  which is totally understandable.  What a terrific thing that he made it to Toronto this weekend.

I hope that Darryl Sittler has someone with him tomorrow on the ice.  He was really emotional understandably, especially since he is a good friend.

The best part of the game was seeing Borje and watching Willy hug him.  Then  the game started and it was just another desultory performance.

My take on the game is a little different than the posts above.

The team played well offensively. Especially in the first. Penguin goalie was stellar in net to start the game and was the reason the leafs weren't up by 3 or 4 at the end of 1.
Defensively, the team continues to be a mess. I was specifically watching for odd man rushes. I believe I counted four 2 on 1's in the first period. That's not a recipe for success. Fix the defensive issues and this team starts winning more games.

As for Kallgren, I thought he played quite well. Even with the goal at the start of the 3rd(which was a screened shot through the legs of Giordano).

I watched the pre game this morning as for some reason my feed wasn't working on SN Now last night. Emotional pregame. Sittler is my all time favourite Leaf and watching him break down hit me as well. Team I grew up idolizing back in the early 70's. As someone else had stated you think that would have energized the team but not this bunch. Win it for Borje at least.

Yeah because they wouldn't have wanted to win the GAME. Stop with that crap.

I could care less what the score was. This was about honouring a Leaf Legend who's fighting for his life.

THIS is all that mattered last night and will again tonight.

A fine post until you added those two garbage sentences at the end. You just can't help yourself, huh?

I love Darryl Sittler, may the inverse bless him.  Goddamn it, life can be so cruel.
