Penn State Scandal

So Penn State cuts 'Sweet Caroline' from it's stadium singalongs. I mean, come on. How far to they need to take this?

1. The school is saying it's unrelated to anything having to do with the scandal
2. Even if the above isn't true then Sweet Caroline is the cliche-iest of stadium cliches so there's no great loss
3. I don't think Penn State fans are much inclined to be singing the pre-chorus of that song right now so it's probably the right choice regardless.

1. Sure.
2. Still a lot of fun.
3. You think all Penn State fans (like the school seems to have) want to morph the relative innocence of the meaning of that son into something to do with the scandal? I don't know, that's kind of my problem. Where does it end?

I don't know if they want to but I think that what Penn State fans want hasn't exactly dictated the course of the world lately.

There are other songs to sing. It's not like it's a song that's particularly associated with the school. Where does it end? It meaning sensitivity to how the school is perceived? Probably not for a long time.

I didn't ask when does it end but where. I mean sure, there are other songs to be sung but there also other films to be viewed and books to be read, etc.. I mean, Jiminy Crickets, when does the burning start?

You lost me a little. Where does what end? Books and films?

C'mon. You can't seriously be sitting here saying that you don't understand why Penn State doesn't want thousands of fans singing "Touching me, touching you" at their games this fall.

I'm having trouble following.  Why is the song "sweet Caroline" being banned by Penn State?  Did the crowd sing it to Joe P. or something?

The first pre-chorus in Sweet Caroline goes, if memory serves,

Hands, touching hands
Reaching out
Touching Me, touching you

So, you know, some negative connotations there.

Yeah, books and films. Will Penn State cut some other stuff out of their curriculum that they find sensitive? - Even if it has absolutely nothing to do with the scandal?... And no, I really don't see why that song would pose a problem. I mean, it's a lovely tune that has nothing to do with one or two creeps.

Yeah, that's rather ridiculous.

I think you're making a pretty big leap there. This is an issue about image and directly about the football program. This is about what goes on at football games. To suggest that there's a natural connection to books that might appear on a course curriculum doesn't seem grounded much in reality.

Have you ever been to a football game at a major college stadium?

Why? Does it matter?

I think so. I think the reason Penn State did this has a lot to do with the atmosphere at games and, in particular, the atmosphere at games in their own stadium now that there might be significantly more tickets available to fans of visiting teams.

They must have. The song wasn't associated at all with the Sandusky horror but it sure will bring it to mind now whenever it is played... anywhere.

It might be a leap but what else are they going to do? I mean, is it okay to have that song in their baseball program? If not, why? If so, where else is it banned. What else is going to be banned? The banning of this song is (as prince put it) ridiculous. - Just my take.

All songs with the word "touch" in them are now banned. Forever.  CD burning at the main square at Penn State at 6pm.

/sarcasm.

"We Will ROCK You." - Let's ban that too.  ::)

"I've got a feeling, a feeling deep inside, oh yeah." = BANNED!  >:(

Well, I think it's important to not get carried away with how we exaggerate this. The song isn't "banned" in any meaningful sense. It just won't be a song they play in the stadium. That puts it with, oh, a million other songs in the world. If fans feel passionately about singing it, and to be honest I have no idea if it was a song that was particularly big at Penn State games although most of what I've read says it wasn't, they still can, they just won't have accompaniment.

But again, I'm still lost. Leaving aside the material differences between Baseball and Football in the context of a major university in the states(do Penn State baseball games even draw crowds?) I don't see what problem you would see in terms of consistency  if changes like this were exclusively confined to the football program.
