Phil Kessel

So what's the over/under on what Kessel's weight will be coming into camp?  Why do I have this vision of him laying on the couch the entire time during the lockout eating panetonne and ferraro rocher chocolates?  Normally he's around 200lbs, I say he clocks in at 215.

Maybe he needs a box of Baci!  ;D

I love how this revolves around Italian desserts. Funny thing is I've been putting Nutella on Panetonne this year! It made something great even better hahaha. Anyone remember those Mon Cheri chocolates?

Don't even get started on Nutella, I can eat the entire jar in one sitting.

Si!  I used to buy them and they were delicious.  Don't seem to be around anymore.

Effects of a long layoff from hockey.  I haven't watched a Leafs game in what?  10 months?  We're all "off our game" a bit right now.

Ferraro chocolate is anything but sad!:D

Plus I'm assuming the three of us speaking about it are Italian. Discussing food is in our blood!

I was raised in an Italian family, parents off the boat.  We love our food.  ;)

On a side note, Im listening to the radio and I find it interesting that many callers and people want to get rid of Phil Kessel now that he's gone.

I don't really understand this. I think he still has value, he's very young. What is the real tangible difference between Kessel and Perry if they both are goal scorers - whom Kessel outscored last year playing with a far worse centre in Bozak (assuming he plays with Getzlaf).

So why is it considered that has so much value in comparison? Gritty style of play? I'm not sure. I still think Kessel, at 25 and as a potential 40 goal scorer, also has a lot of value, but maybe his persona or the media spotlight here diminishes that. And does it make sense to pawn of Phil Kessel to try (and possibly fail) to attract Corey Perry? Do we stick with him or see if we can get some prospects back? Although I'd much rather have a 25yr old 80pt player than a prospect...

Just some thoughts.

Probably a backlash due to the way the deal it worked out. Very irrational and it will cost us - probably having Phil leave as a UFA.

I'm so sick of the media eating up this market/team. That's why it was so refreshing to have Brian Burke as the GM. He couldn't stop it, but he would throw the BS back at them!

I think people are assuming Kessel won't want to re-sign here in Toronto.  Given his personality and all the scrutiny around him coming to Toronto, I don't doubt that he might want to go to a less media-frenzy market.  So if it's true that he'll bolt as a UFA, it's imperative that Nonis deals him this season and maximizes what he can get in return.  Kessel should bring back good pieces.

I don't think every player wants to immediately jump to a smaller market.  Kessel has been on record as saying how much he loves Toronto, and he's been able to keep a fairly low profile here.  I'm sure people had the same concerns about Sundin when he first came here, too.

I hope he stays.  If he's able to put up such great numbers during a tumultuous period for the team, with mostly lackluster teammates, I'd love to see how he performs on a stronger Leafs team.

I guess it all depends on how the Leafs play in the next 12 months.  If things are going well Kessel will probably want to stay.  Amazing how a winning team can fix so many other issues that swirl around the team.  We haven't seen a winning team in Toronto in a long, long time.

Oh god this radio show is stupid.

They're saying Phil Kessel wasn't wanted in Boston so trading for him was a bad idea.

What moronic logic. Every trade would be a poor trade as the logic is everyone would view the other player coming back as junk.

Ray Ferraro came on and basically schooled them. Said everyone has warts on their resume and you can't view trades in that way. Example: Jeff Carter couldn't get it done in Philly, gets traded and becomes an important part of LA. Jeff Carter isn't viewed the same here in TO but Ray views JC and PK as pretty comparable players.

It's easy to second guess deals after many years, but at the time there was a ton of negative attitude about that trade.  Giving up two first round picks for a guy when you're not sure how good your team is didn't make any sense.  The fact that the worst case scenario ended up playing out, Boston gets 2nd overall and wins the Cup, well it just gave ammo to all the people who were down on the trade from the start.

Kessel is probably the only Leafs forward with any real long-term value to the team.  That in itself might be an argument to trade him and restart the building process, but I'm inclined to want to keep him around for the long term.

But wanting to trade him based, in some contorted way, on the manner in which he was traded to Toronto is idiotic or on the fact that Burke was fired is idiotic.

I agree but their philosophy on how trades work is simply moronic. To say that one player is not wanted by one team so why should we acquire them? Is an idiotic question. Trades would never exist with that kind of mentality.

Yeah. I mean, for one, it's not really true. Kessel was traded because of a contract dispute and cap issues, and because of type of assets he'd return in a trade, not because he wasn't wanted. That's massively oversimplifying the situation. Most troublingly is that that stance assumes the infallibility of the management groups around the league, and, we know that's just not true. I mean, just look at Lupul - there's a situation more akin to a team no longer wanting a player, and, so far, that's worked out pretty well for the Leafs.

Kessel was the first Leaf in ten years to score over 80 points.

Credit were credit is due. I guess if the team was more successful Kessel would be more appreciated. He is definitely not the problem in T.O.
