Weak defence by Holzer on the Flyers 2nd goal. He's someone I'm expecting to challenge for a spot this year, but not with plays like that.

To be honest I didn't see much from him last year either, other than some brief flashes.

I just don't get it with him. He's so calm and smart at the AHL level but any time he's dealing with NHL level guys he just seems to lose it.  I thought he was going to be a rock solid #6 for sure but its looking less and less likely every time he's out there.

Rielly looks like he could make the transition to me. He'd have some growing pains but seems like he'd learn a lot and pretty quickly. Love his skill set.

Gauthier looks like he'll be a 3rd liner at best (though he could be a really good one), Raymond should make the team, Biggs unfortunately looks like he'll be a bust, Ranger will probably make it.

Liles and Franson are questionable IMO as Phaneuf, Gardiner, Gunnar, Fraser, Rielly and Ranger could prabably get the job done effectively (and much cheaper) over the course of the season. Not the worst problem to have.

So I'm not watching this and I'm not that familiar with Ranger's skill set. However, say he makes the team, would he render Franson redundant?

After two periods you're already pencilling the 19 year old kid in as a 3rd liner?

Yes, that wasn't clear?

EDIT: On this year's team? No. I mean his skill set looks as if he'll be 3rd line material when he reaches his potential. He's not making this team.

You're basing this assessment on 40 minutes of a pre-season games?

Not be rude, but if that's the case you're nucking futs.

Maybe so. I don't see any kind of speed or skating prowess in the kid. He's also 6'5 which isn't exactly helpful if your skating isn't terrific.

I'm giving my opinion. I think he looks like he'll be an NHL player (unlike Biggs IMO). By all means, reserve judgement, but that's my gut instinct of seeing him play. I'll either be right or wrong we'll see..

Just kind of pointless to give an uninformed opinion, no?

I'm not sure what you mean by uninformed. I watched a bunch of material after the draft on Gauthier and read numerous  scouting reports. Watching him in those videos and so far confirms what I've read/seen so far. A fair number of people who scout players for a living think he's a safe pick with limited upside (likely to be a 2nd/3rd liner). Are they uninformed? I can see why that's a line of thought, and I happen to think that's where he'll ultimately fit in. Feel free to reserve your opinion (informed or otherwise), lest someone criticise you for it. It'll be a pretty quite board though....

Gibson played well. I liked what MacWilliam brought to the game too. It wouldn't surprise me to see him climb the ranks fairly quickly.

Excited about Rielly. Looks good already and will just get better and better.

Ranger is making this team.

Franson - what happens with him?

Raymond - wow he is fast

Let's preface this by saying it's early...but jeez is that Rielly kid poised.  He reminds me of how Kabs used to play years ago, which was a real cerebral game.

Ranger is an NHLer, and him and Rielly make a nice pairing.

Kadri was super visible.  But other than these guys, add MacWillliam and Gibson, nobody else made much of an impression on me.

Jim Ralph is back ?

Yeah, he's back. My sister lives down the street from him, and he's friendly with her boyfriend. Some stuff went down after the initially wanted to fire him (I don't remember the exact details, but, there was some sketchiness involved when they let him go and some issues with potential replacement and such), and they basically came crawling back to him.
