I liked this play a lot; Marner getting the accolades for the primary, but this goal happens because Rielly had his head up seeing Marner's call for the rim play, and Matthews' silly ability as a 6'3" superstar to get lost quietly in between coverage like some sort of ambush predator in the savannah.
Look how frickin' open he gets even as a marked man. Crossbar denies the goal.
One thing about the Keefe system that bothered me was how he had them parking a stationary body at the net front (Tavares, Simmonds) and passing around the perimeter for a seam. Drifting through the slot at the right time is arguably more effective and easier on the body. Tampa rarely puts stationary players in front of the net, and they like to sweep two bodies through the slot as the puck goes low to high for shot attempts.
This one didn't result in a goal, but it's a great way to use simple hockey (low to high) and give it a bit of zing with a high skill variant of a basic play (high slot redirect). We should do a few more high tip plays instead of floating muffins directly at the goalie.
